Beyond the vast windows of Palm Beach’s iconic Breakers resort, the ocean sparkled as women in designer florals paraded under the lobby’s vaulted, hand-frescoed ceilings. They were headed to network with Martha Stewart and Tommy Hilfiger and swap Hermès and Gucci purses for charity at a $600-per-ticket “Old Bags” luncheon.
Later, many of them joined the daily flock gathered poolside at the historic Colony Hotel, sipping cocktails served by young men in pink shirts. Apart from the rose-hued hotel’s interior update, including a new Goop-designed bungalow, similar scenes could have unfolded a half-century earlier — which is why the new Apple TV+ show Palm Royale, set in 1969, doesn’t seem very dated. The characters played by Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern and Allison Janney could have easily mingled among this crowd, and when the show incorporated shots of The Breakers, the only thing they had to adjust for historical accuracy was the cars.

Australia’s Seven West Media and its Seven network may risk reputational damage following Federal Court revelations in Sydney on Thursday and Friday.
The defamation case was brought by former Liberal Party political aide Bruce Lehrmann against Network Ten and journalist Lisa Wilkinson. It does not directly involve Seven.
Lehrmann was tried in court in 2022 over the alleged rape of another political aide, Brittany Higgins, in Canberra in 2021. But the case and a retrial were abandoned with no findings against him.
Lehrmann’s defamation case alleges that Network 10 and Wilkinson have made false claims that he raped Higgins.
Network 10 and Higgins have said that they would defend their reporting as “substantially true.”
In late 2022, Seven, Australia’s most-watched TV network, aired an exclusive two-part interview with Lehrmann. But how its “Spotlight” investigative news program obtained that interview is now the subject of intense debate.

Australia’s Network Ten has given a private apology to Jacinta Nampijinpa Price after the indigenous senator was heard being mocked by TV host Lisa Wilkinson in leaked audio.
The audio, reported last week but recorded back in 2021, featured Wilkinson apparently mocking the Coalition party and struggling to pronounce “Nampijinpa.”
And Wilkinson can be heard saying the Liberal party preselected “over 20 new and wonderfully diverse and strong female candidates like, and what’s her name, Nam… Nampinjumba? (sic). She’s an Indigenous woman.”
Another voice on the audio, David Sharaz was heard replying: “She clearly got in. Clearly it was a safe seat.”
And producer Angus Llewellyn was heard adding: “See, we know brown people.”
Price spoke out on Friday, telling Australian radio 2Gb the comments were “racist” and “derogatory.”

Apparently Today Show host Karl Stefanovic forgot for a second that he lived in Australian, where the spiders are as big as your head and giant sharks leap out of the water in an effort to keep you from going near any form of water ever again. After watching a terrifying segment on how the Discovery Channel now has better technology to study sharks, which ended with footage of the biggest shark we've ever seen leaping out of the water, Karl and his cohost Lisa Wilkinson's were scared speechless. And as Australians they're probably used to the weird, freaky stuff that happens in nature down under. (Again, have you seen their spiders?!) So when a video leaves them looking like this: You know...

Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan to parade their sexiness around the globe in the name of Fifty Shades of Grey, this time with a stop in London at the Odeon Leicester Square. The hunky Brit smoldered in a navy suit, while his onscreen leading lady showed off some serious skin in a white Saint Laurent gown complete with a plunging (and we mean plunging) neckline. And while the two are certainly easy on the eyes, Australia's Channel 9 Today show co-host Lisa Wilkinson couldn't quite get on board with the film adaptation of E.L. James' super-popular book trilogy. During this morning's appearance on the talk show, she slammed the film and called it "the worst movie I've ever...

Welcome to the February 12, 2015 edition of Outrage Watch, HitFix's daily rundown of all the things folks are peeved about in entertainment. Today's top story? Beyonce gets a smack-down from Huffington Post contributor Kim Lute. Oh boy, does Kim go after Beyonce here. In an impassioned article posted today, the Peabody-winning journalist takes aim at the singer's performance of the classic Mahalia Jackson gospel song "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" at Sunday's Grammys: "The performance of this iconic song, of which Beyoncé and her family apparently believes is uniquely theirs alone -- though it's sung almost universally at black funerals and churches -- should have been fraught with significance," she writes. And then, more damningly: "And if, as Beyoncé contends, this song means so very much to her why hasn't she sung it on any of her 200 albums? Could her performance have merely hinted at an exaggerated sense of self-worth that...

"Fifty Shades Of Grey" takes it off, ties you up, and gets it on this weekend, and by all accounts, the box office will be huge. But will audiences dig it? Certainly fans are already between the sheets for the flick, but critics are mixed, and some, like our own Rodrigo Perez, completely loathed it. And he's certainly not alone. Down under, on Australia's "Today" morning show (via Film Drunk), you might think you'd find a softball review of the movie from a show that's aimed right towards stay-at-home moms or people who just want a bit of easy news before heading off to work. But you'd be mistaken. Lisa Wilkinson goes off on the movie (with some annoying cheering on from her fellow colleagues) and tears it a new one in a clip that's making the rounds for good reason. Meanwhile, The Onion's Peter Rosenthal offers a hilarious take on the movie,...

This is one of those points people make where you say, “Well, duh.” But you’re also glad they made it because nothing has changed since the last time someone made it. Women working in the media have it harder than their male counterparts.
Karl Stefanovic, an Australian newscaster for Today, proved this by wearing the same suit on air for over a year. He wore the blue, "cheap Burberry knock-off" two days in a row, and when no one noticed, he kept wearing it. For a week, then a month, then a year.
Karl thought of the social experiment came after co-anchor Lisa Wilkinson talked about viewers spending more time critiquing her fashion sense than her journalistic work (fast forward to 27:00 in the lecture below).

If a colleague is a known prankster, it's probably a good idea to read the script before going on air.
One reporter learned that the hard way when TV host Karl Stefanovic pulled an "Anchorman" prank on Australia's "Today" show and changed the teleprompter in order to trick his colleague into reading a humorous line.
Sports reporter Roz Kelly was recapping a recent soccer match in the Europa Cup when she fell for trick, reading straight off the screen.

"You didn't check your scripts did you?" co-host Lisa Wilkinson questions.
The presenters then joke about who may have planted the line -- "your flatmates upstairs?" -- but its fairly obvious from Stefanovic's reaction that he was the culprit.

In the battle for Australia’s early morning viewer, Today beat Sunrise in the ratings yesterday – the third day out of four this week.
This is the first time the Nine breakfast show has beaten its Seven rival so frequently in the week since last year, when Today won on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday on week beginning 24 October.
Today pipped Sunrise narrowly by 6,000 viewers yesterday, rating with 345,000 compared to 339,000 nationally, even though Sunrise’s audience was bigger in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, according to overnight OzTam ratings.
The Karl Stevanovic and Lisa Wilkinson-fronted show also won Monday by 20,000 viewers and Tuesday by 4,000, only being outdone in Wednesday’s ratings when Sunrise won convincingly by 68,000.

The London Olympics will be available to free to air viewers in HD, Nine has revealed.
The announcement came as part of Nine’s launch event for its first coverage of the Games since winning the rights from Seven. The Olympics begin in late July and run into August.
In common with rivals Seven and Ten, Nine’s main channel is in standard definition only. But for the duration of the games, it will be simulcasting with Gem which is in high definition.
Meanwhile, partly because of the time difference with the UK, Nine’s Olympics will be on virtually around the clock.
This includes competition coverage from 6.30pm through the night to 9am. This will then be followed by a two hours highlights compilation which will also air again in the afternoon.
Although the Today show will not air during the Olympics, presenters Karl Stefanovic, Lisa Wilkinson and Cameron Williams...

From the advertising dollars to the ratings rivalry – television’s earliest timeslot is big business. Brooke Hemphill sets her alarm and goes on set to find out the perfect recipe for making breakfast TV.
It’s after midnight on a Thursday evening in Sydney’s Cbd. The streets are largely deserted as the final day of the working week looms. While the nine to five set are safely tucked up in bed, in the heart of the city, Seven’s Martin Place studio is quiet, although never sleeping. Several journalists staff the newsroom on the first level and one flight of stairs above, two producers work the overnight shift for Seven’s market-leading breakfast program, Sunrise. Soon they will be joined by line producer David ‘Dougie’ Walters who is about to begin his day.
At a time when hospitality workers and university students contemplate calling it a night, Walters is at his desk.
