A small town located on the banks of Sutlej river, Kalpa lies in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. Famous for its apple orchards, historic temples and monasteries, and absolute scenic beauty, it’s a place to be visited between the months of March and September, because the winters here are extremely cold and harsh.

A visit to Kothi, an ancient village with stunning art and architecture is highly recommended to travellers in Kalpa. About 11km from the centre of Kalpa; Kothi is famous for a temple dedicated to goddess Chandika Devi. Set against a backdrop of majestic mountains and deodar trees, the temple has an unusual architectural style with an exquisite gold image of the goddess enshrined in its inner chambers.

Often confused with Mount Kailash in Tibet, Kinnaur Kailash is a 6,500m high mountain, that can be seen from the town of Kalpa. Considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists, this mountain range also offers hiking and trekking opportunities to the adrenaline junkie.

Evening walks in Kalpa have a charm of their own, and one of the best walks is to Suicide Point, about 10 minutes from the village by foot. The route takes you through bountiful orchards of luscious red apples and it is highly recommended that you spend some time there with your loved ones. Another place that can be visited on foot is Batseri, located on the banks of Bapsa river. There are two temples in this village worth visiting; one dedicated to Lord Buddha while the other is the Badri Narayan Temple. Batseri is popular for its handicrafts and food items such as handmade shawls, caps, pine nuts and chilguza, that are perfect to take back home as souvenirs.

For those interested in architecture, Sapni Fort is a monumental fortress with extraordinary intricate wood carvings. The highlight of the fort is its conjoined building with impressive woodwork on the window frames and doors.
