In Short

  • iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro's teardown video has been uploaded by iFixit.
  • The teardown shows a lot of similarities between the two devices.
  • The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro share a lot of hardware between them.

Apple recently launched its iPhone 12 series of smartphones to the world. At the launch, it revealed some features of the devices, but as always did not disclose every detail about the spec sheet of the phones.

But as every year, teardown videos from iFixit are here to give us a deeper look into the hardware that Apple's iPhones house within their sleek frames. For now, iFixit has managed to get its hands on two of the four phones launched by Apple earlier this month. The phones in question are the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.

Because the two phones offer essentially the same form factor as they are based around displays of the same size, iFixit has done the teardown of the two in the same video. Because of the similarities in design the two phones have also been given the same repairability score -- 6/10 -- which incidentally also happens to be the score that iPhone 11 clocked in terms of repairability.

The teardown also shows that the two devices also share many of the parts, making them identical in a number of ways. The sharing of parts is to such an extent, that iFixit even shows the displays of the two phones functioning even when interchanged.

The similarities don't just end there. iFixit shows that the design internally is again almost identical, with the iPhone 12 using a plastic spacer inside instead of a LiDAR sensor to keep the overall form factor identical.

Apart from this, the two phones also share the Taptic Engine which iFixit notes are the exact same between the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. The teardown video also shows Apple has abandoned the L-shaped battery design that is used in previous phones and this year. Instead, it has gone for a more generic rectangular battery, which iFixit says could be down to attempts of saving costs.

But while there are a lot of similarities, there are a few differences between the two devices. The biggest here is obviously the camera module as the iPhone 12 Pro gets an extra sensor. Additionally, the two phones also differ from each other when it comes to the RAM available on the device.

In the video, it claims that Apple uses a 4GB Micron LPDDR4 RAM chip on the iPhone 12 and 6GB on the iPhone 12 Pro. In the teardown, it also the presence of the Qualcomm Snapdragon X55M 5G modem, and Samsung storage.
