Prince Harry's Latest Move Takes Him Even Further From the Royal Family

When Prince Harry moved to California four years ago, it felt like a tectonic shift in the royal family. But with a new change, it feels like he's taking a major step away from the royals for good. According to the Mirror, the Duke of Sussex recently filed paperwork with the Companies House related to his eco-tourism initiative, Travalyst, shifting his country of residence from the United Kingdom to the United States. The publication notes that his "new country/state usually resident" was the United States and that the date of the change was actually backdated to Jun. 29, 2023, which marked one of the very last days he and his wife, Meghan Markle, were still living in their U.K. home of Frogmore Cottage.

At the time, a spokesperson for the Sussexes confirmed the news that King Charles had asked them to move, saying, "We can confirm the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been requested to vacate their residence at Frogmore Cottage."

Relationship expert Louella Alderson notes that Harry's recent move may be signaling that he's no longer prioritizing his relationships with his family. Additionally, with things between himself and his brother, William, in a constant state of tension, Harry may just be sending a message to everyone across the Atlantic.

"Prince Harry's decision to officially declare the U.S. as his new country of residence feels like a significant step in his distance from the Royal Family and his British roots. While Harry has been living in the U.S. for four years, declaring it as his new usual residence officially feels like a subtle but sure way of establishing boundaries and creating a new identity separate from his royal duties," she explained. "Harry's relationships with his family are already strained and this step sends them a message that he is not planning to return to the U.K. anytime soon, if at all. His relationships with the royal family do not appear to be a priority for Harry, as he focuses on building his new brand and career in the US. The finality of this decision could potentially cause Prince William and other members of the royal family to feel hurt and disappointed, but it may also provide clarity and closure for everyone involved."

Even with the latest news regarding his country of residence, Harry is scheduled to speak at the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games later this year. There's no word yet on whether that means that there will be a reunion between him and William — or if Meghan will also make the trip, but sources close to the royals are hoping that Archie and Lilibet get some quality time with their grandfather.
