Brian Moran ’06 Gets Closer to the Big Leagues

Iona Prep alumnus and minor league baseball player, Brian Moran ’06, is entering his fourth season in the Seattle Mariners farm system. After another successful season in Triple-A, and with winter meetings in full effect, Brian’s name is swirling during many discussions among general managers.

Brian is expected to be named to the Mariners roster for the upcoming season, but if he’s not he can enter the Rule 5 Draft and be dealt to a new organization because he is no longer protected by the team’s 40-man roster rules.

According to baseball experts, the left-handed reliever is an intriguing and rare prospect. He had 82 strikeouts in 68.2 innings last year, between Double-A and Triple-A. In addition, he gave up only 53 hits and had a 2.62 ERA.

On the other hand, Brian’s fastball is not-so-fast, running at 82-87 mph. He often strikes guys out with 85 mph fastballs, because of deception. There are certain hitters who have a very difficult time seeing the ball against him. It’s so extreme that catcher Guillermo Quiroz said that some opposing hitters said Moran throws an “invisi-ball.”
If Brian keeps putting up numbers in Triple-A with the Tacoma Rainers, somebody will give him a chance in the Majors. But will it be right now, via the Rule 5 Draft? Only time will tell.
