PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A lone cherry blossom tree flowering at the intersection of Columbia Street and 6th Avenue earlier this week hints that it’s almost time for the annual bloom along the Portland Waterfront.

Portland Parks & Recreation spokesperson Mark Ross told KOIN 6 News that the waterfront trees are likely still a few weeks away from blossoming. Will Lerner with the Portland Japanese Garden told KOIN 6 News that the cherry blossom trees in the Japanese Garden are also a few weeks away.

“Our cherry blossoms typically arrive later than those you see at the waterfront and throughout the city — it has a lot to do with our elevation and different weather patterns we see here in Washington Park,” Lerner said.

While the trees are expected to blossom by mid-March, Lerner said that each year is different. The garden historically reaches peak bloom at the end of March.

“As we have done in previous years, we’ll be updating [the Japanese Garden website] regularly with the status of our blooms beginning next month when we start to see things stirring,” he said.
