Couple moves wedding because of Obama's golf game

Whenever a president visits a place, the Secret Service moves people away -- even when it's a golf course, and a wedding is involved.

President Obama phoned an Army couple who had planned to be married Sunday at the 16th tee box at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course in Hawaii, but had to move the ceremony because the president played there that day.

Natalie Heimel and Edward Mallue Jr. -- both Army captains -- wound up getting married on a lawn near the home of the commanding officer of Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Bloomberg News reports.

In his phone call, Obama "apologized and congratulated them," said Jamie McCarthy, Mallue's sister, to Bloomberg, adding that it was a "wonderful talk."

The golf course is apparently a popular wedding site because of spectacular mountain views.

Also from Bloomberg:

"It was the second time that day that the couple heard from the nation's commander in chief, whose affinity for golf has, at times, caused political headaches for the White House.

"Stationed in Hawaii and knowing the president spends his Christmas holiday on the islands, they invited him to their ceremony on a lark. They had received a letter earlier on Saturday saying Obama regretted he couldn't come and wishing them happiness on their wedding day."
