Notes: | Released by GO! (US Gold) in the UK. Due to the similarities with Super Mario Bros. Nintendo threatened the developers, but no actual lawsuit was filed. This caused Time Warp Productions and Rainbow Arts to immediately stop production. The rarity of this game has made it popular (and expensive) among collectors. | ||||||||||||

Graphics: 9 ‧
Music: 8 ‧
Playability: 10 ‧
Overall: 9
+ despite being an obvious copy of a famous title, it has its own distinctive "personality" and well deserved cult status
+ entertaining to play, good to look at, nice to listen to
+ a true classic C64 gem made by enthusiastic professionals
- the tight time limit often spoils the fun
- occasional bugs and glitches
- losing a life - and therefore losing abilities - on later levels can make them a pain to complete
9/10
Super!
When this game came out, I had never heard of mario bros, I only had giana sisters.
Great graphics, memorable sounds and music, colorfull, joyfull, nice animation, just superb. I have spent years to master it. Even now - after like 20 years, I'm still able to make an almost perfect run with only like 2 lives lost (with using warps). Great memories, a good game even with todays standards.
For my it's a 10/10.
I always played with trainer, this is one of those games what still a challange even if you have unlimited lives.
10/10 this is a MUST
Tested version: Remember +9
Tested on: C128 NTSC - OK
Use real hardware for real experience!
The levels are quite short and don't give me any feeling of actually working my through a level. Controls are floaty and the enemies are the most generic unidentifiable things I have seen in a game. The level graphics are pretty uninspiring too.
What it holds it up is some okay level design (mostly copied from SMB) and catchy music. The title screen is especially nice.
A good game in it's own right but only good, not great like it's master
I also like Chris Huelsbeck's music. Even though he often seemed more comfortable with Paula, he did a good job here from the catchy intro tune with digitized drums to the laid back in-game music.
The biggest flaw of this game is easily the the cover art. The german one is a mediocre try to make something sexy when it rather should be something cute and cartoony and the UK one is just one of the ugliest I've ever seen.
I give this game a solid 9.
Music's pretty good and it's easy to make it to the end of level (and that's saying something for me).
I put my C=64 stamp of approval upon this one.
6/10
Plays like a competent, second-grade Mario clone. Decent for 64 users at the time, but these days when you can just boot up a NES emulator and play the original, there's hardly much point.
but I prefered the Mario Bros
I guess I'm not a true fan, but it's still a good game and I play it from time to time.
And for the record, I think there's better C64 games than the original SMB anyway - or at least equal to.
Still play it almost every day at work (during break time offcourse )
A true classic!
And the title song for this is way better than
dodododododo do dododod yeah, dumb.
Theyre both fun games for different systems
Nicely done GFX (just Giana on the Title-Screen looks a little awkward... ) and Sound (of cours, Huelsbeck at work!), and _mostly_ smooth gameplay. And that mostly sometimes spoils it a little. Collision is sometimes a little flaky, which can be frustrating, and some gfx-bugs are ugly, but not really disturbing.
I've seen many of Trenz's games suffer from these flaws, Turrican is a good example, you have shots standing in midair, sometimes "deterioating" Background and so on.
The Level Design of TGGS is quite good, compared to other games, but in my opinion there's not a real "learning curve", but mor like steps and hurdles. After LVL 8 it becomes significantly more difficult, and after that you only have certain difficult jumps at some Levels (11, 19, 24, IIRC) but that's it.
But still this is a true classic, I spent lots of time on this one
9 out of 10 - C64
10 out of 10 - Amiga
I know I really liked the SMB version and I played both it and SMB on the Nintendo, but as was often the case I like the stuff on the C64 better.
Having recently discovered this game, I am pretty impressed with it as an original game. I must confess to still enjoying the SMB Hack more, but this game deserves Kudos for out Nintendoing Nintendo.

Never played SMB so can't compare and don't really care. The Amiga version was good but missed something for me (the title screen wasn't quite as nice?!)
Just KIDDING!
I literally loved this game, especially the music. It also wasn't too difficult, so little kiddies like me ( )could play it until the last level (unlike lots of other games). Great and lots of fun !!!

I guess it's nice for C64 fans to have a Mario-like game to call their own, but honestly, I'd rather play the original than settle for an average imitation.
It was for sure one of the games that we played most. Well I can count many games that we played the most... But this was for sure one of them =)
Played it hours and hours, day and night... Great chiptunes, legendary graphics and amazing addictive gameplay.
WOW!
Played many times and couldn't get enough!
When I got Amiga, I got this game for Amiga too and played days and days Giana!
Giana-Sisters is my favourite game !
PURE GAMEPLAY.
Another C64 Classic
10/10
but I was very close. Maybe one day I will correct that.
That aside, I guess it's a decent platformer... But I'd still rather play SMB.
is discounted. It plays better, its quirky, edgey
and the music is magnificent.
If Carlsberg made Mario-clones it would make this - probably the best.
So GSS was a SMB Clone, so what, I mean arnt all platformers - Cool Spot, Chuck Rock, Fire and Ice, Donkey Country Country, all SMB Clones. Then agin SMB is an Apple Panic clone expect the screen scrollls - so there !
GGS RULES - 1987 - TODAY and FOREVER, so shove your Nintendo up your Nose.
Score 10
It was a clone of a clone, hi, hi.. Made by Time Warp !
Maybe. It's a good game thought.
For the person who said 'Sigheru Miyamoto is a genius his work is ripped off all the time.. ' This may be true. But he couldn't come up with a game that couldn't be beat by a lowley 8-bit machine.
For just that reason(s) it was kicked off the market by Nintendo and thus it became no official sucessor to Super Mario. Thats a shame, but official or not, clone or not, who cares, its actually the better game!
(Does everyone rember the A. R. M. I. N. - cheat?)
Anyways - who wants the Mario-Broz after trying Giana Sisters ??!!??
NOT me. =o)
my version had some odd bugs that made the game crash in pretty hilarious ways.
Simply the Best!
