#LeadingTeams is hard. Being the "#NewSheriff" in town is hard. Here are my #TopThree tips to any new leaders. 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣
When I think about a memorable time as a new leader of a team, one event immensely stands out, the January 2020 team offsite.
#SettingTheStage: I had just been named VP of Customer Success in December 2019 and was set to lead a group of five very talented women. This individuals were unbelievably strong, but the team was almost non-existent. They had been without a leader since May 2019, having to fend for themselves with minimal leadership support.
#ThreeThings I noticed out the gate:
👎 The team did not talk to one another, very siloed
👎 No purpose/higher vision
👎 No unified process for completing tasks
I knew I had my work cut out for me and knew for us to be #successful, we had to come together and #StartFresh.
⚡Then the #idea hit me ⚡... I needed to completely remove them from their environment to get the creativity flowing. I did what #NoLeader at the company had done before... rented an #Airbnb and used that as our hotel, office space, and playground.
My love for #GraphicFacilitation came in handy. I got my giant rolls of paper, handy markers, and sturdy tape to create an experience that fostered creativity, teamwork, and team vision. (sound familiar- Sophie Bernhardt, Rachel Link?)
We agreed on a #TeamQuote to motivate us for the next year: "The best view comes after the hardest climb." We knew it was going to be hard, but we would be able to do it, if we did it #together.
#ThreeThings that worked well as a #NewLeader of the team:
👍 #Listen to the team - don't come in shouting orders, hear what they have to say
👍 #BreakTheNorm and bring the team to a new space to innovate (ex: rent an Airbnb!)
👍 #BeVulnerable - be there for your people and show up authentically, create an environment where they feel safe to share new ideas
#TheResult after that week was amazing... we had a #TeamBonding like never before, we had #NewIdeas that would help differentiate us in the industry, and, most importantly, we had #fun.
That week will forever standout as one of my favorite work weeks. Shoutout to the fabulous ladies that made that trip what it was (Katie Russell, Jamie Gearig, Nivea Brookens, Cynthia Main, Karen Sheridan).
I hope this helps you on your #LeadershipJourney.
And as a reminder, #BeKind to one another.
