Suzuki reduced the gap between itself and the Volkswagen Group as South Africa’s second best selling vehicle brand in February to just over 100 units. South Africa’s new vehicle sales continued its downwards trajectory in February, albeit not on the same scale as January when it fell 3.8% on a month-to-month basis. Bouncing back after a poor start to the year, the February figures by naamsa | The Automotive Business Council showed a meagre decline by 0.9% from the same time last year from 45 162 to 44 759 – the latter 3 113 higher than in the first month of 2024. Out of the country’s top 10 best-selling brands, a unchanged top three prevailed, although behind Toyota (11 524), Volkswagen edged-out Suzuki by a mere 112 units to only just keep its second place on the podium with total sales of 5 333 versus the Hamamatsu’s 5 221. Automobile industry generally operates in low double digit EBITDA margins and Eicher Motors' 23.7% is unheard of, globally Eicher Motors which gets 80% of its revenue from Royal Enfield has an 85% market share in 350cc+ motorbike category While there has been a continuous onslaught of new entrants trying to get a share of the highly lucrative 350cc+ category - Jawa, Yezdi, Harley Davidson, Triumph, Bajaj, Honda have all tried but RE maintains its sheer dominance The reasons for exceptional margins are simple: Royal Enfield's ASP is ~3x of peers like Bajaj, Hero, or TVS RE exports are to developed countries where it earns 25%+ higher revenue whereas competitors like Bajaj, Hero, TVS are exporting to emerging markets at margin dilutive prices RE has amazing pricing power because it is an aspirational brand. Only 7% of RE owners buy as a first motorcycle - It is usually the 2nd or 3rd motorcycle in a customer's ownership journey when they're looking to spend money on an upgrade It's crazy that 15 years ago, this entire category was practically non-existent!

Full Size SUV sales for the month of May 2023 are here and the segment saw change in sales trends. The Toyota Motor Corporation #fortuner continues to rule the market with sales at 2,887 units sold in May 2023. While Jeep India #meridian saw growth in sales at 418 units and Hyundai Motor India Ltd. #tucson sales dropped down to 379 units. Morris Garages India #gloster which got a new Storm Edition sold 217 units. Volkswagen India #tiguan saw a growth in sales and sold more than its Czech cousin. The #volkswagen #tiguan sold 171 units whereas SKODA India #Kodiaq managed sell only 157 units.
