I'm so proud to share that I've been asked to be a champion for The Magnificent - a 10 week fundraising competition for The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation with #TeamLuke. As a result, anyone with CF has to undergo a variety of daily therapies to battle the effects of this deadly condition. -The life expectancy of someone with CF 30 years ago, was age 30. Because of funding towards research and medical advancements, today many are living to age 50. -Lung transplants used to be expected for someone with CF, the need for these has decreased in the modern day population thanks to all the progression of the science and treatment modalities. -There are only 44,000 cases of CF in the United States which is why donations to this cause are crucial.

June 19th was officially designated as World Sickle Cell Awareness Day. The international awareness day is observed annually with the goal to increase public knowledge and an understanding of sickle cell disease, and the challenges experienced by patients and their families and caregivers. A new research study is using AI to improve life after stroke for stroke survivors! It's #BrainAwarenessWeek 🧠 and as part of the Stroke Alliance For Europe (SAFE) we're helping raise awareness of the importance of research in stroke. Today we are highlighting a new project called TRUSTroke TRUSTroke researchers are developing an advanced technology to help healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers manage both short- and long-term effects of an ischemic stroke. Research is vital to enable more people than ever to survive stroke with better outcomes. Polycystic kidney disease is a chronic genetic disease causing the uncontrolled growth of cysts in the kidney, often leading to kidney failure. There is no cure. There are two types of PKD: autosomal dominant (ADPKD) and autosomal recessive (ARPKD). ADPKD affects an estimated 600,000 Americans and 12.4 million people worldwide. ARPKD is a rare form of PKD that occurs in 1 in 25,000 children worldwide. 100% of funds from the #WalkforPKD go toward PKD research for more treatments and a cure. The Walk is the largest gathering of PKD communities, with thousands of PKD patients, family, friends, researchers, healthcare providers, and supporters. Best wishes for The New Year - I hope everyone had a joyous break and connected with friends and loved ones. Our vision at Lung Foundation Australia (LFA) is to champion programs and research so that Australians with lung disease and lung cancer can live their best life. I know that annual reports are not high on everyone's agenda to read but this is a good one :) It captures the story of LFA and our purpose. Working for purpose is what gets me out of bed every morning. Working directly with consumers through our advisory and engagement opportunities keeps us grounded and relevant. The consumer voice needs to remain central to what drives our purpose and I feel very privileged to work with consumers who give so generously of their time to make a difference. Frustratingly, the challenges and barriers described by consumers has remained consistent over my 30 years of doing this work - not feeling heard, feeling isolated, struggling to navigate the health system, poorly connected and not given the time or resources to be effective partners in their healthcare. We are working to change that and I know that many of you are also working hard to create that change. For me, I am hoping that 2024 will be less about admiring the problem and more about working on solutions that matter to people and that can create the shift that we are all looking for. It is complex because it requires change at a system, clinical and consumer level; celebrating success is important because it reminds of us of how far we have come and what the recipe for success looks like and it keeps us motivated when it all feels daunting. I hope you re-engage with your purpose in 2024 and if you want to connect with the work of LFA please let us know.
