Austmine 2023: Transforming Our Future, a global event bringing together 1200 industry leaders, influencers, strategic thinkers and technology experts, opened in Adelaide yesterday. The conference commenced with a keynote presentation by Edgar Basto, Chief Operating Officer, BHP. “BHP is particularly focused on future facing commodities” Edgar said. “These are resources that can help meet the demands of decarbonisation, electrification and population growth. The world needs good companies to develop these resources and which presents a huge opportunity for BHP and the entire sector.” he added. The plenary sessions continued with a keynote presentation from Christiaan Heyning, Director of Decarbonisation, Fortescue. “Australia is a country of mining, and we must continue to mine. There is no way the world can survive without mining. For energy transition and sustainability in a broader sense, it’s critical. Patrice Motsepe, Africa’s first Black billionaire and Southern Africa’s wealthiest Black individual, has experienced a comeback in his net worth, increasing by $200 million in 17 days after a recent dip that saw his net worth drop. Motsepe, renowned for becoming Africa’s first Black billionaire in 2008 due to the success of his mining group, African Rainbow Minerals (ARM), now boasts a net worth of $2.4 billion, up from $2.2 billion on October 20. This financial recovery aligns with ARM’s recent share rally, with the company’s shares rebounding from a low of R149.94 ($8.2) in October to R166.3 ($9.1), highlighting the mining giant’s resilience in the face of market challenges. Prior, Nairametrics had reported that Motsepe had become $1.1 billion poorer in 2023, largely owing to the faltering stock price of ARM. But the recent rally of stock improvements has bolstered his net worth. The rebound in Motsepe’s net worth can be attributed to the surge in the market value of his 40.37% stake in ARM, a leading South African mining powerhouse involved in diverse mining projects, including iron, coal, copper, gold, platinum, and other precious metals. Shaun Day, Greatland Gold MD joins London South East for a sparkling investor Q&A session We were joined live by Shaun Day, MD at Greatland Gold PLC (GGP) Gold for an hour and 10 minutes of Q&A on Thursday 9.3.2023 and he didn’t disappoint. Shaun brought a new presentation with him which included the drill results just released for the 100% owned Scallywag tenement, and the latest news on the ASX cross-listing. Shaun told us that the ASX cross-listing would hopefully be happening in June-July 2023. He described the Scallywag results as "exciting: the most promising we have seen since Havieron." He still hopes to be drilling Ernest Giles in the second half of 2023, although that's not written in stone yet.  He confirmed that Newcrest is in play and that Newmont may or may not end up purchasing NCM. And although Havieron is in the Top 10 Australian gold mines with 3M ounces so far, Havieron is still relatively small. It would very much depend what Newmont, a super major with some very large mines globally, made of the asset. "If they came and fell in love with Havieron they may decide to keep it. And therefore may pay a suitably large price for our 30%. Or they may on the other hand decide to sell, and we have a first right of refusal if it is sold.
