The day I met Merv Hughes I cried

Merv Hughes has always been a hero of mine. For those of you who are unaware of who he is, Merv is one of the real characters of Australian cricket. A right-arm fast bowler, he represented Australia between 1985 and 1994 in 53 test matches, taking 212 test wickets.

Quite a few years ago ND Cricket had the great wisdom to invite the big fella over to speak in front of their sponsors,. players, and friends. I purchased a table, and packed it full of cricket-crazy-clients. Much to my clients delight, I'd organised a surprise. Merv was to sit at our table before and after his keynote.

I was nervous. You shouldn't meet your heroes, right?

He came over, shook my hand. Nodded at all the clients - and was very quiet and reserved. Öh god"- I thought to myself.

He made his way to the stage.

Now I've had a lot to do with comedians in my life. I set up a radio comedy network, and was also one of the original directors for The Classic in Queen Street - and I can tell you this - Merv is one of the funniest guys I've ever seen in my life. I was crying with laughter - and my body was hurting because I was laughing so much.

He ended his keynote, and returned to the table. He had remembered everyone of my clients names;

"Right Gary, John, Brian, .....(and so on, - pointing at each one)....I'll go grab the beers.

(Below is my favourite Merv Hugh story)

Many years have passed. I managed to get hold of his phone number recently. He didn't answer, so I left a message "You won't remember me, but I've set up a company representing MC's, speakers, and bands - and I was hoping that you'd consider hopping on my books"

A fortnight passed, when I got a call from his Aussie manager,

"He remembers you. We're in"
