Things to know about Caño Cristales
Caño Cristales is a natural site located in La Macarena National Park, in the department of Meta, in central Colombia. 🇨🇴
Considered the most beautiful river in the world, Caño Cristales is nicknamed the "River of Five Colours" or "Rainbow River" for the different hues it displays after the rainy season. ✨
The presence of endemic algae offers beautiful and saturated colours, forming a cameo of yellow, green, blue, pink, purple and brown. This algae is called La Macarenia Clavigera. This species is typical of tropical and subtropical climates and has the particularity of changing colour according to its exposure to the sun. This is why Caño Cristales is a multicoloured river. 🌈
The landscape around Cano Cristales is breathtaking, with high mountains and lush tropical forests. La Macarena region is also known for its exceptional biodiversity, with many rare and endangered animal and plant species. These include rare birds such as the giant hummingbird, bearded toucan and blue-headed parrot, as well as unique species of fish, frogs and reptiles. 🦜
The river and the area around it are preserved today. It is one of the most representative environments of Colombian biodiversity with ecosystems corresponding to those of the Andes, Guyana, Amazon and Orinoco, all in the same place. ✨
