200tdi Bosch VE injection Pump

Hi, plenty has been written about the VE leaks through the three main seals. My defender developed a fuel drip that filled the depression in top of the front diff casting, streamed round the offside lower corner of the drive belt case, and always wet the under surface of the pump at bumper end. It NEVER dripped out of the wading plug orifice and the control spindle on top of the pump and the rear of the pump are dry. The leak didn't seem to be coming from the oval plate with the two set screws. After hours of puzzling over this and searching the internet I unscrewed the lock screw that retains the distance piece that is taken out when you need to lock the pump. This screw has a green O ring that I suspect is the trouble. It's about BS109 2.62 thick and 7.59 ID thereabouts (see pic). I've ordered a pack of this size in Viton. Can't think of anything else that can be causing this leak. IMG_7391.jpgIMG_7395.jpg The notched bracket and its screw can be seen at the bottom of the pump view just above the engine mounting. I think the pump is an ERR1333 90-95 Defender Bosch VE 0460 414 069 and so perhaps could be re-kitted with the defender 90-99 kit ZZRGK223/1 Bosch in Viton rubber. Anyway I was just wondering whether anyone else has had this problem.

Hopefully it'll be the seal on the lock screw or the seal on the plate. IMG_7390.jpgIMG_7393.jpgYou may well be right....it may be the plate. Thanks for the modified plate source.

Yeah. It does look higher up than the plate. My only thought is that i'm not sure the end of the lock screw goes into a chamber where diesel is present.

Re: 200tdi Bosch VE injection Pump leak

(This is being posted after a previous post that hasn't appeared yet). Re the leak on my 200tdi Defender injection pump, I've so far been thinking about seals but this leak doesn't seem to be coming from the front seal of the pump (because timing case not dripping via wading plug hole) and drips are coming off the shaft lock screw. It doesn't appear to be coming from the oval plate or the lock screw seal. The white arrows in the picture show where it might be coming from.VE4 11F 1900R347-1 leak.jpg The picture shows the top of the injection pump flange bolted to the rear of the timing case. The white arrows indicate the highest level of wet. By video it looks as though the fuel is squibbing from the point marked by the lower arrow but it's very hard to tell with the engine vibration. Thanks in advance for any ideas. I don't think I've ever disturbed the bolt marked by yellow paint. I fitted a new gasket between the pump and the front plate when I removed the timing case to remedy an oil leak between the case and the ladder. It went back with a new timing belt and the pump was removed to make the re-installation of the timing case easier.Snapshot 1 (20-05-2013 18-39).png The second picture is a frame from a video taken with the engine idling. As I write this I'm thinking that more revs might have been better.

I don't think its a pin hole in the casting. I think I have to take the pump off and check the paper gasket and look at the end seal. But the timing case still seems to be dry.

IMG_8210.jpgIMG_8213.jpgfuel pump with arrow.jpgThis is 22nd May 2013. This is a summary of the 'leak from the 200tdi Defender Bosch VE 4/11F 1900R347-1 injection pump'. Diesel leaks when engine running only. It drips from the shaft locking screw onto the front axle. There is no diesel coming from the wading plug. The drive belt case is dry. I've ordered a new upgraded oval plate and seal from Wade Diesels, Hoddesdon but the fuel appears higher up on the front of the pump on the offside (ie from nowhere). I've changed the O-ring on the shaft lock screw to no effect. I've changed the copper washers on the input pipe banjo, again to no effect. Now I've removed the pump and can confirm that the timing chest is bone dry and the end of the pump was dry on removal. So at this point I'm none the wiser for removing the pump. Anyone any ideas? I have a video of the pump running but the file is too large to add here. Any experience of this out there?

Wades quoted me about £150 to recondition my pump if needed. I wonder if its worth explaining the problem to them and going down that route (or another Bosch specialist near you)? If there is a gasket there, it would probably be replaced during the process.

Failing that, give them a ring and describe the leak - they might be able to help.

Vulcan Bomber on LRO forum has taken a few of these apart, so he might be able to help you a bit more if you ask on there or PM him. He's not on here unfortunately.

Thanks Reb, I've been in touch with Greg Zaruba who wrote an article on dismantling and reassembling a Bosch Pump (not the Defender one unfortunately - there were component differences. He suggested filling the pump with diesel and then pressurising it lightly (5 psi) through the inlet banjo. He didn't know what was behind the nut sealed with the yellow paint just above the leak area on mine. I didn't realise you could pressurise them without having to use a motor on the driven end. If I can get the pump to leak without the engine vibrating maybe I shall get somewhere. Anyway, £150 doesn't seem to be too bad for a recon pump so that's a very good fall-back position, thanks. I'll try a little longer with this pressurising idea and then if that fails it could well be Wade's. Have made a note of Vulcan Bomber also.

Bosch have been very helpful and provided a PDF of the Defender VE4/11F 1900R347-1 injection pump. This may be useful to other members with 200tdi vehicles, perhaps those who have a 300tdi too.

Hi Stephen just come from under my bonnet trying to find an injector pump leak and found that i have what looks like the same problem as yours and was just wondering if you sorted it out it was a few years ago you might have to dig deep;

Hi,
I have the same leak on a 200tdi Disco1 and I don´t find where it comes from.
Have anyone maybe a solution?

Greetings from Germany
