The pyramid of Djoser also called the step pyramid, located on the archaeological site of Saqqara in Egypt, is a monument of capital importance which testifies to the architectural prowess of ancient Egypt. Built for the pharaoh Djoser for the Third Dynasty around 2650 BC. AD, this step pyramid is considered the very first Egyptian pyramid and marks the beginning of the era of monumental constructions.
The architect Imhotep and architectural evolution
Designed by architect Imhotep, the Pyramid of Djoser represents a major evolution in funerary architecture, moving from traditional mastabas to a stepped pyramid structure. Imhotep is today considered one of the first architects and engineers in history and was deified centuries after his death.
Characteristics of the Pyramid of Djoser
Rising to about 62 meters in height, the pyramid of Djoser has six superimposed degrees, each one tilting slightly inwards. The dimensions of the base of the pyramid are approximately 121 x 109 meters, making it an imposing structure for its time.
