How to Trim False Eyelashes Yourself

How to Trim False Eyelashes Yourself

Long fluttery black lashes – considered the epitome of beauty for centuries. This is the look sought after by most women and is the reason for the multimillion-dollar false eyelash industry. However, there is a difference between long and oversized. Long is good but having oversized lashes that are too big for your eyes can just weigh down your face and look unnatural. Most eyelash manufacturers tend to make larger sized lashes to cater to all women. If you have smaller sized eyes, then these can be overpowering for you. However, these is a solution to this problem. You can easily trim the false eyelashes to get them to be the perfect fit for your eye. The process for trimming the lashes is not very complicated and is outlined below.

Trimming Strip Lashes for Width

If the strip lashes are too long for your eye, you need to trim it slightly from the ends or it will end up poking your eye. While trimming the width of the strip lash, you need to trim each strip separately. Our natural eyes are not identical. Though they look similar, they are slight differences in each eye. To get perfect results, it is better to trim each strip separately to fit the eye. To trim the strip lash for width, follow the process indicated below.

  1. Always cut the strip lash from the other edge. Most false lashes will have shorter, wispy lashes on the inner corner of the eye. This is to give a more natural effect and to ensure that the lashes are comfortable at the corner of the eye. If you cut off the lash strip from this end, you will be cutting off the thin, shorter wisps that are there to protect the eye.
  2. Hold the strip lashes against the eye to measure the amount that needs to be trimmed off. You can use a pen to mark the exact place where the lash needs to be cut. If this mark comes in between a cluster of lashes, chopping the lash here will ruin the shape of the lash. It is better to a bit creative and cut around the cluster to maintain the gorgeous shape of the lashes.
  3. It is advisable to cut a bit more than what you need to trim. You can then place the lash at the outer corner of the eye, leaving the inner corner a bit more open. This will help to keep the strip lash comfortable. You can always cover any uncovered areas with the help of a mascara.
  4. Repeat the process with the other strip lashes for your next eye.

Trimming Strip Lashes for length

Trimming Strip lashes for length needs a lot of patience. If you cut a bit too much off, you will risk ruining the lashes completely. To trim the strip lashes, you need to follow the process indicated below.

  1. Make sure to have very small scissors to trim the length of the lashes. You could use manicure scissors or ones that come in a first aid kit. These are very tiny in size and will be adequate for the task.
  2. Hold the strip lash against your natural lash and determine the exact amount of length that needs to be trimmed off.
  3. Make sure that you take note of the various lengths of the lash. False lashes typically have clusters of long and short lashes. Ensure that you keep these in mind while you are trimming the lashes.
  4. By attempting to trim straight across the lash will ruin the shape of the lash. It is the varying length that makes the false lash so gorgeous. Cutting off the varying length will spoil the effect of the false lash.
  5. You should try to cut the same amount from each cluster of lashes. This way you will be retaining the shape of the lashes. Start by trimming half the length of what you want to cut from each side.
  6. Once you have cut off half the length of the lash that you were originally going to cut, then hold the lashes up to your eyes and see how they look. Determine if you still need to trim more.
  7. If they are still too long, trim half more of the length that you think you need to trim and check again.
  8. It is better to repeat this process 4 or 5 times until you reach the perfect length, than trying to trim off the whole length at one go. This will ensure that you don’t cut too much, and it will not ruin your lashes
  9. Once you have trimmed off the length to your desired size, check to see that they don’t look too artificially blunt. If they do, then it is better to feather them. To do this, you need to angle your scissor and cut at a vertical angle. This is the technique used by hairdressers to perfect the ends of your hair. While feathering, it is important to keep the point of the scissor away from the lash band to avoid cutting it off accidentally. Then, using tiny vertical cuts, feather the lashes to make them look natural, soft and wispy.

Good quality false lashes can be quite expensive. It is a good idea to spend a few minutes to trim the lashes according to the exact size of your eye to get a perfect look. All you need is a pair of scissors and a bit of patience.

Alternatively, you can opt for lashes that are shorter in length if you find medium/long lashes to be too long for your eyes. All of our lashes have length listed on them and you can choose to filter by your preferred length using our Lash Style Selector.

Good luck in getting your falsies to look as natural as possible. You are all set to rock you false lashes.
