Galoshes

Manufacturer Goodyear American

Not on view

The vulcanization process made rubber products - including galoshes- widely available in the 1850s. Know as the gaiter, this classic boot form with three or more adjustable metal clasps had been developed by the 1890s, and changed little in the ensuing sixty years. The style was worn by men, women, and children with minor variations in shape to suit differing shoes.
