Before getting started you need to make sure you pick up the right type of RAM based on the motherboard your PC has. You'll likely be choosing from the previous-gen DDR4 kits or current-gen DDR5 kits, however, some older motherboards can require DDR3 kits. This is something you can find in your motherboard's instruction manual and sometimes in the name of the motherboard too.

You'll also need to consider the speed of your RAM and the amount of memory you're looking to install. Once you've figured out what's best for you and picked up your RAM kit, then you can proceed to install by following the steps below.

How to install RAM in a gaming PC

Find the RAM slots on your motherboard, ours is the MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk, there are usually two or four, but some motherboards can have more. If you're struggling to find the RAM slots, consult your motherboard's manual.

If you’re installing a dual channel kit like our Kingston 8,000MT/s Fury Renegade DDR5 kit, which means you have two sticks of RAM, follow the instructions included with your motherboard to know which slots to use.

It will typically be slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 for the best optimisation.

  1. Unclip the sides of the RAM slots on your motherboard
  2. Place your RAM into the slot
  3. Gently push down until you hear a click sound.
  4. Repeat for however many sticks of RAM you're installing
