The Harry Potter film franchise is arguably one of the most famous and beloved movie series of all time.

Only true Potter fans will remember one character who was played by two different actors during the films.

No, we are not talking about Albus Dumbledore here.

French replaced Spriggs in the third film of the Harry Potter franchise

Although the Hogwarts headmaster was portrayed by two actors, there is another character who also had two actors bringing her role to life.

During a scene in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the young boy wizard encounters a portrait who guards the Gryffindor common room.

Otherwise known as The Fat Lady, the character asks Gryffindor pupils a password before she lets anyone in.

In the first film, this role was played by the late Elizabeth Spriggs.

The classical trained actress was known for her work with the Royal Shakespeare Company and received a Bafta nomination in the film Sense and Sensibility (1995).

Although she only says one line in the entire film, she was replaced three years later by comedian Dawn French.

In the Prisoner of Azkaban, French is in more than one scene portraying The Fat Lady throughout the film.

She famously adds a comic twist to the role by making the character more slap-stick and funny.

Spriggs was alive to see her character being replaced, but died a few years later in 2008.

Outside of Harry Potter, Dawn French has been nominated for several BAFTA awards and National Television Awards for her works in The Vicar of Dibley and French and Saunders.

French was previously married to comedian Lenny Henry before divorcing in 2010.

She remarried in 2013 to charity executive Mark Bignell.
