yeah, that's right.

the moe-tans are no replacement for the real stuff but more like cute inside jokes.

This is true, but it just makes representing a product a lot of fun. Here is Fastech 360-tan.

It's not like there aren't a number of knowledgeable people in this thread, but I always feel people underestimate how many factors go into making a good podcast. It's not like most podcasts suck simply because the hosts have no idea what they are talking about. It really comes down to:

- Knowledgeable participants

- Participants who are able to explain points clearly and concisely

- Great chemistry between participants

- A host who understands how to create a conversation, when to cut people off, when to move the discussion on etc.

- Someone with far too much time on their hands to edit out all the fluff, dead air and repetition.

- Ideally, preparation.

The hardest thing about long-distance podcasts is that with everyone disconnected, it's very easy for people to accidentally talk over each other, due to loss of body language. I never really mastered that.

There's a pretty good chance it would turn out poorly if attempted, but the only way to know for sure is to try, and the only thing wasted would be our time and dignity.

If AnimeGAFCast ever comes to fruition and you need someone with a German accent who watches Anime for 20 years, hates every other beloved mainstream show and defends ecchi shit, shoot me a PM.

While this is probably true in terms of sales, it makes me wonder if the Japanese market might be vastly more friendly to a variety of shows if everything was cheaper. I know this is not something that can realistically happen, but it would be interesting to see if western otaku tend to buy any of the higher quality shows that fail in the Japanese market, or if the failure is about equal on this side.
Given what I've heard about the sales of fanservice shows here in the West (including Infinite Stratos), I'd say the tastes of the hardcore otaku tend to be similar in both areas.

As an example, the top-selling show of last season, Inu x Boku SS, was consistently the most popular show on Crunchyroll behind the trifecta of Naruto, Bleach, and Gintama, and will likely do quite well for Sentai when they release it. I don't personally understand it, but that show had something which appealed to otaku everywhere.

I'm not gonna lie. I do buy those types of shows too. But I am also willing to buy the higher quality shows that flopped. I like to collect a little bit of everything.
With anime here as cheap as it is, its possible to gather a wide array of different types and qualities of anime.

Surely SOMEONE from this thread has the motivation to set something up. Hopefully several people.
AnimeGAF regulars obviously have enough time to make this one of the fastest moving topics on GAF, so time shouldn't be an issue. But someone needs to organize and host, and someone needs to finalize the stuff. That's work. And people hate work. I wouldn't want to organize and I wouldn't want to host, but I would participate and I'd probably do the downmix.

The other problem is you're going to end up with at least 20 people who want to be in the podcast. That's a bit too many if you want coherence.

Inu x Boku beat 2 of the big 3 and another large WSJ series on a US service? Weird...

I'd think there would be some kind of rotation. Limit it to 4-5 people per episode.

Well, I guess, congratulations are in order? Again.

About damned time they posted that. I betrayed that post like, the hour it was made! My guess is they're really backlogged after that long dryspell.

Also, I would totally do an AnimeGAFcast. I can bring my brilliance with the smooth sexy sound of my voice! Before you all had to imagine it! D:

Seriously though, I'd totally dive on an episode and talk smart about anime with my fellow bros.

I say all the better to weed out the people who don't know how to talk. I'd be very interested in an AnimeGAF podcast but my biggest worry would be that it would just be a lazily slapped together gathering of people who can't connect together on a verbal level. It will be how every amateur podcast starts out like, so I'd emphasize to the person who volunteers to head such a podcast to please, rehearse. Get the participants to talk as if they're at a roundtable ready for discussion instead of at the arcade just spewing points at inconsistent and unusual intervals.

You'd also need extremely focused topics on a podcast. None of the "everyone list your top-10 _____ animes," that's not going to be informative or interesting. It would have to be structured around discussion of specific works and everyone would have to do homework on it so they could contribute.

Right. You need about three regulars who can carry the whole thing if necessary, and maybe one or two guests each episode.

Why not a "Week in Review" where we give fast opinions on the week's shows and then choose something to go more in depth with. Maybe a retrospect segment and "News" part with stuff like DVD sales and upcoming shows. Not that hard to build a format we can get fresh material every week or two. We could even go monthly.

Sorry if I wasn't clear; Inu x Boku SS was the 4th most popular show on CR through the winter season. Obviously you can't beat the power of Naruto and Bleach.

Looking at the show which occupies a similar position right now, I can already see what one of the big sellers of this season is going to be:

I think this would probably be for the best. If we just did a weekly recap thing, I don't trust everyone here enough that it wouldn't just wind up being fast impressions without much substance.

I don't think you'll find a shortage of people wanting to talk on a podcast (I know I always love to hear the sound of my own recorded voice), but then it's a question of who out there has the patience and gumption to try to wrangle four or five people from around the world and get them in the same Skype channel at the same time for an hour. And that's without considering quality of subject or anything like that. Without that person, this will never happen.

I'm kind of uniquely poorly suited at the moment for anything like this (since during weekdays, I'm unavailable during that 9PM-3AM EST band where people seem to be the most active), but I'd still be interested in seeing it happen.

Can't argue against that, Tooru was just awesome.
Loved the moments when she would slap Yuuko's chest. Haha!
Gotta love Tooru. The also introduced the idea of the "Durian burger" to me, which like Bittermelon soda, also sounds like the best thing ever.

It's funny that you say that, because those top-down shots are something I associate with SHAFT (usually for money saving purposes).
See, I don't care about money saving shots as long as the shots are actually useful and provide information. If anything, I would give them the benefit of the doubt and say that they chose the shot first and the money saving was a happy accident (in the case of this show and Shaft).

Firehawk, we don't always agree, but when we do agree, we really, really agree.

You've finally helped me realize why I see Yuuko as such amazing waifu material even though I'm ambivalent about the show. She's Hitagi and Sayoko's lovechild.
Yep. I was wondering why I found her so familiar in the first episode, but when I noticed it, it just clicked. The "Shaftisms" in this episode probably helped me out a lot.

Also, Ano Natsu is still the best thing ever. :p

I was pleasantly surprised to find that both boxsets come with a supplemental book which features art work from the show and a glossary of terms. I would have preferred something along the lines of interviews with the staff who worked on the show, but that's I realise that's just a foolish dream. There's a pretty short one at the back, but I would have liked more.
So how do you like the Anglophile porn aspect of the show and the packaging?
With all the Downton Abbey hype, I'm surprised Rightstuf isn't trying to ride on the back of that hype train.

(I would have picked up the series... but maybe next Christmas sale).

We made up a Strawberry Panic drinking game for you in the HanaIro thread. FYI.
I can't believe you remembered that!

Naw, of the "juniors", it's Yumi/Sachiko for the win!

So, I sort of know first hand the problems that come up. If you do a "round-up" show, you need to have people that share a common interest beyond "they like anime", because you'll just have silence when people rattle off the shows they watch.

The other thing is that there just aren't new things to talk about. TV works because it seems every other week there's some new show premiering or some big show worth following (Mad Men who are Justified has been the running theme these last few weeks). Anime doesn't really work that way.

And news is mostly pointless unless you can edit the show fast enough to get it up soon after you record it... which really is the hardest part of doing any podcast.

i) Let's call Crunchyroll "Western" rather than "US". Particularly in the case of Inu X Boku which was streamed in all major English language territories and Latin America.

ii) You've misread hosanna's statement - Inu X Boku came fourth behind those three series.

Inu X Boku has crossover appeal. It's got shoujo art with a shounen story; the girls can watch and fangirl over a bishounen who will obey any command his teenage mistress gives him, and the boys can watch for the moe girls. Whether or not an anime is technically good or well written, much as with any form of entertainment, has no bearing on its success - it's about appealing to as many people as possible in some way, and series like this hit many, many buttons.

Yeah, you would definitely need to have organization and focus to make it work. You'd need to have some good talking points planned in advance.

A podcast where everyone just talked about whatever they like probably would wind up going poorly.

It sounds like you're trying to say that Wandering Son and Usagi Drop aren't the most popular simulcasts in the history of Crunchyroll, and that's just not something I want to hear.

It definitely hit the CUTE BUTTON something fierce.

Regarding recorded voices, I find it amusing that some people mistake me for a girl over the phone. I wonder if this effect would happen in a Podcast. Probably so.

I don't think it needs to be that serious. You can definitely make a successful podcast even if you just wing it. Editing things afterwards is the real chore.

Haiyore! Nyarlko-san Episode 1

This man is rolling in his grave

Shut up Poplar. You aren't a cosmic horror.

How the fuck did this kid end up reading Lovecraft anyway? I know Japan has a fasncination with aliens since like the 70's or something. If he had been reading them why the fuck hadn't he had more of a fucking reaction to finding out Nyarlathotep.

This boy must be the key to the collapse of the world, and this being that is known to seduce and make people lose awareness of the world around them through fantastic demonstrations is using one of its 1000 forms that would be most useful in this situation, a rove u young female humanoid.

I'm okay with this. I'm less okay with "Listen to Me Girls, I'm Your Father" being more popular than "Kids on the Slope".

Kids on the Slope is horrifyingly low on that list, but hopefully it'll go up once the first episode is put up for non-subscribers.

Winging it can make a successful podcast, but then it is all the more important that the people on it are knowledgeable about the subject and have good chemistry with each other.

I like to think stabbing her with a fork is his way of venting over a bunch of Lovecraft monsters being the opposite of what he expected.

I think the form she chose is just right. Can't go about being all eldritch yet. the endtimes aren't here. So a moe girl with a killer ahoge will do just fine. JUST FINE.

the sooner people realize and accept the fact that Apollon is going to be a great series that bombs harder than Fractale, the better. I'm hopeful it bucks the trend, but there's absolutely no reason to think so.

I think winging it can work when you have a podcast where the hosts are pretty familiar with each other, but it's harder to do if you don't have that familiarity of conversing on a regular basis. That's why having some planning would be important.
