Defender Ashley Cole is back with the Galaxy, signing a one-year contract, the club announced Wednesday.

Cole, 37, joined the Galaxy in 2016 and has been a steady force on the defensive back line. He has made 55 appearances in his first two years with the Galaxy.

“We are very excited that Ashley will be returning,” Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid said. “He’s been a tremendous leader for our club and he’s shown he can be successful in this league and we’re confident that will continue in the season ahead.”

Cole’s contract with the Galaxy had expired following the 2017 season. He had a base salary of $350,000.

He joined the Galaxy after playing with AS Roma in Italy. He’s also played at Chelsea and Arsenal.

The Galaxy’s back line has already undergone a makeover with the additions of Rolf Feltscher and Jorgen Skjelvik.
