Dame Helen Mirren has revealed she is "enjoying" her new long hairstyle and has addressed the idea that women of a certain age are meant to keep their hair shorter.
The actress, 77, first showcased her long silver hair on the red carpet in February, when she looked radiant at the premiere of Golda in Berlin. She has recently been promoting her new film, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and has continued to let her hair down in wavy down dos.
In an inspiring interview on Lorraine on Wednesday (8 March), Mirren described her new hair look as "pretty cool" and explained that she decided to grow it long in the Covid-19 lockdowns and "couldn’t be bothered to cut it".
She said: "You’re not supposed to have longer hair after a certain age. But during Covid, I started growing my hair and I hadn’t actually had long hair since I was in my 20s. And it sort of grew and grew and grew, and I couldn’t be bothered to cut it, basically."
Mirren added: "And then I thought, do you know what, it’s pretty cool, I think I’ll stick with it for a little while. It will come off eventually. But I’m kind of enjoying it, it’s quite radical."
Later in the interview, Mirren explained why she's proud to fly the flag for women over the age of 60. "Life doesn't stop, creativity doesn't stop, passion doesn't stop, and energy doesn't stop, unless you decide to stop it," she said.
Mirren plays one of the villains – Hespera, the daughter of Atlas – in the Shazam! sequel, which will be released in cinemas on 5 April.
