Buyers have jumped at the chance to secure the last historic buildings from the former Kew Cottages — once part of the decommissioned Kew Asylum facility.
Two of the last three buildings sold at the end of the expressions of interest campaign in June.
Both 48A and 48B Main Drive sold within their quoted price guides of $1-$1.1 million and $1.2-$1.25 million respectively.

Now, one building, 48C Main Drive, remains for sale for $1.45-$1.5 million on the site, which was a special development school and residential service for the intellectually disabled that first opened in 1887.
Jellis Craig director Richard Earle said the buyers came from inner Melbourne.
“As expected, they will renovate them and move in in due course,” Mr Earle said.
“There was a lot of interest, it was a very rare offering.
“It allows people to get in with a blank canvas, sort of similar to inner city warehouses.”
The buildings have been completely gutted inside and need new floors, ceilings and internal walls. Imagination is needed to create something special.
The buildings were listed for sale separately after the state government in 2014 determined the buildings were no longer required by residents at Kew Residential Services.
They have been restored in accordance with Heritage Victoria’s requirements for development as high-quality residential properties with new roofs, high ceilings, bluestone foundations and verandas.
The two buildings that have sold were built in 1887 and were the old school house with chapel annex and the cottage.

The remaining building was the former children’s dining hall, built in 1917 in red brick Edwardian style.
The historic properties are surrounded by luxury estate in the sought after Studley Park.
