You know those ads that are like a bunch of zombies or whatever marching towards you and you gotta shoot barrels to get upgrades and shit? I dunno why but I really want to play that but it's NEVER what the actual game is. Does this mysterious ad game exist anywhere? Is there anything like it? Why do they do this?

I like watching them. I've only seen one victorious scenario. Usually they grab the dumb choice weapon and get smashed by Hulk Zombie.

Cute and comical stickman characters have arrived for you to enjoy "those games" you've seen and wanted to play before. Play a variety of minigames fully, thoroughly, and enjoyably to your heart's content!

Closest we can do right now.

This came out last year based on them, it's on Switch too - donno about other platforms.

Those aren't real? They actually look fun, but I always assumed it was spyware backdoor or microtransaction hell so I never even think about pulling the trigger.

I stand with you OP. I know they're misleading scam bait, but I'd actually like to play something like them.

The one with the turn base combat always gets me. The guy gets tossed off a cliff and slowly starts leveling up until he makes the dumbest decision imaginable. The marketing is on point.

Doesn't Evony have that? It also has these pull pin puzzles. But I've never played it and really don't want to lol

The ones I want to play are those ads where the mother and daughter are in a freezing run down house and you have to fix it up. But the actual game itself is just boring match-3 shit.

It's hilarious that they spent all the time and resources to not only create games people hate but then also created ads for the game that look nothing like those games but instead look kind of awesome and fun and what people REALLY want to play.

I just checked the reviews for evony in Google play, and most of them say that the advertising is misleading, it's a pay to win PVP 4X / war game; you may encounter the barrel shooting minigame, but it's not what the game is about.

I used to see ads for a really amazing looking coin pusher game and when I downloaded the game, of course it wasn't even to be found in the game at all. These ads shouldn't be allowed when the ads themselves are scams.

Seen one where the character is shooting barrels and is gunning down one with a motorcycle. It stops at 5 despite getting several shots before moving to another barrel.

Or the one where a hero that starts with lvl 50-300 and does wacky stuff like wanting to drink some giantesses drool, crush a city with a giant boulder or more only to get kicked and start at lvl 1

Oh I hate those. The "pre-cliff" sequences in those ads have also gotten progressively more off-putting over time.

Before these ads I never realized how powerful a motivator the incompetence of others is.

I wish they'd come up with a better aesthetic than those stick figures.

I'm kind of fascinated by Evony. It seems to be just a platform for scamming people, and it's been around for, what, 15 years? I remember those old "Play now my Lord" ad banners they used to have all over the place with the medieval women with massive cleavage. It just seems to evolve constantly into whatever will get them downloads without actually making a compelling game and somehow it works.

Wow, I didn't know those ads were for this game, the wikipedia controversy section says "Other ads used stock photographs from pornographic DVD covers" .

So they changed their ads from that to misleading gameplay, I guess a video of someone playing the minigame badly must work for them.

I've even seen mobile ads from them whose message is "Hey you, aren't you tired of all those fake game ads, and you want to play the game that's actually just like it is in the ads? Well Evony is that game!" And it literally isn't! It's like the false advertising equivalent of "Made you look!"

I block ads on my phone and PC via pihole and private DNS settings, so I have no idea what this thread is talking about lol.... Incompetently shooting barrels?

Yes, you get these ads of someone playing the game just badly, so you think "huh, I bet I can play better than that", you go and download the game, and it's actually nothing like that, so you uninstall it or... maybe keep playing because you're curious; I bet that's how they get new players, they must retain a small percentage of those people, who just want to destroy some barrels.

I found this explanation about the minigame

Shooting Barrel Game objective

According to Redditor TheFotty, there have been a few instances that Evony has swapped different levels on varying servers. This means that you may never experience the Shooting Barrel Game.

However, when you encounter the Shooting Barrel Game in Evony, you have to collect stronger weapons as you shoot the oncoming barrels.

It is up to you to destroy the barrels before they reach your character. You will allegedly be rewarded for every level that you successfully complete.

Should you play the Shooting Barrel Game?

It is worth remembering that the Shooting Barrel Game, just like the Mysterious Puzzles, has no influence on Evony's main objective. That being said, you will earn rewards for completing levels and solving puzzles.

Several players do not invest time in the Shooting Barrel Game as they can procure the rewards elsewhere in the game.

It is advisable that you only play the Shooting Barrel Game for fun, as it will not help you progress in Evony.

this seems to be the new meta for mobile game ads. On duolingo I get ones that are framed as a 'youtuber' (aka some rando sitting in front of his webcam) ostensibly doing a video series on, for example, 'games people think are fake part 5'. Then it shows 'gameplay' of said game with 'commentary', but if you actually look up the game the footage is fake. The bizarre thing is the game in question does resemble the ad, it just looks way worse. It's honestly fascinating even if there is no way I'd ever want to play any of this stuff.

The ones that are like auto-scrollers and you gotta choose paths that require quick math (like x3 or +9) to increase your size and then you eventually hit some sort of wall that required you to always pick the options that had the largest results. That game actually looks fun. I'd pay $1 for just that game.

I would love to play that game too.. it's really weird they make the game for ads but not for the game itself.

maybe it's just me but being presented with a choice of a larger number would get really old and boring really fast. and it seems like a lot of these fake mobile games boil down to that basic premise

The zombie ones are the best and all look like they're animated by the same outfit despite being for different games. As for actual games we're mostly there with now with the horde tech (see World War Z), but not sure if we've ever seen that in an isometric, top down pov before like you see with these ads. Looks fun even if these ads are obviously goofy as hell.

Male gaze warning:

I know there's stuff like They Are Billions but that uses 2d animated zombs for perf reasons. Would be cool if there was one with fully 3d models with numbers like that, and maybe there is and I'm not aware of it 🤷‍♂️

and then you have those other adds, where people are trying these fake games to show us that the adds in fact were real! :O

spoiler: they weren't..

It's a lot easier to just make a 20 second animation than it is to make a whole game.
Makes sense. Maybe because I am a dev, if someone ask for a advertising of this type I would make a small game, full of bugs for sure, but functional to screenshot the ad...

It's just funny that a supposedly game company is creating those fake ads..

My favorite is that "dark and gritty" Pokemon game where the ads show the mons eating people and breaking the fourth wall.

And then the actual game is just shitty knockoff Pokemon with no twist, apparently.

I've seen an ad masked to look like an "influencer" pretending to check out the game to see if it's fake or real, to somehow try and trick people into thinking it isn't... maybe in an attempt at some psuedo-reverse-psychology or something.

It even goes as far as having him start by saying something like, "Checking out games people say are fake, part five." Like it's some ongoing series and he's an expert, haha!

Has anyone played those mob games that are always advertised? They don't look particularly good but the scenarios are hilarious

It's some BS!!!🤬🤬🤬!!! You'd think that they just make a game like they're advertising and probably make more money!!!

I did find a similar game in Hero Rescue: one of the pulling pins games

pretty low budget but got a download from me!

Genuinely don't understand why some dev hasn't just made one. Like: how hard would it be to use some assets and for (eg) Microsoft to make a gears of war themed one? Nothing but an endless stream of bad guys and you get the guns etc and try and keep them held back until eventually they overwhelm you. Stick some leaderboards on it, charge a fiver. I would buy it.

vinesauce covered these. i don't even know what to make of them. all i can say is that they are clearly made by people who have no morals, because morals aren't needed to make money.

imagine being like those scam call centers except that companies pay you to wring up people. no need to steal 50K from an elderly person when you can be paid to steal from others or make fun of sexually assaulting women.
