Big Spring (Kitch-iti-kipi)
We're back from a beautiful weekend in the upper peninsula! We just planned this trip pretty recently with some of our good friends, who had a cabin in the family. So for not expecting to go to the U.P. this summer, this weekend kind of blew me away. Our cabin was just outside Manistique, along a very long dirt road, right on Lake Michigan. It was kind of crazy being out there! There was literally nothing around, except for a few other cabins. All you could hear were the waves from the lake. Just amazing.
On our first full day there, we decided to go to Big Spring (Kitch-iti-kipi). This spring has been on my Michigan bucket list for so long, and I'm so excited I finally got a chance to see it! Let me just say, it's just as beautiful in person as it is in all of the photos. What a seriously magical place. The spring is over 200 feet across, and over 40 feet deep. The crazy thing though is that you can see straight to the bottom. You can see every fish, log, and weed in the water. It was insane! The spring is always at a constant 45º too, and it never freezes, so you can see it like this any time of the year.
The spring is Michigan's largest natural freshwater spring. The name "kitch-iti-kipi" means "big cold water" and is very often referred to as Big Spring. The original name was "Mirror of Heaven", given by the early Native Americans. If you're ever in the U.P. area, or heading from the lower peninsula to the Pictured Rocks area in Munising, I'd say this is worth it to get off the path a little bit to explore. So beautiful!
After our time at the Big Spring, we headed back to our cabin to spend some time on Lake Michigan. It was a bit chilly, so I just ended up falling asleep in the sand and it was wonderful. I just feel like a different person in the upper peninsula sometimes. It's just so relaxing, so gorgeous, and there are so many things to explore. I just love it. I want to someday live up there, even if it's just for a short amount of time. Hopefully I can afford a small cottage some day and retire up there! I have a ton of things left to explore, and so many more lighthouses to find up there! Someday. :)
