Who was Joan Miró?
Joan Miró i Ferrà, commonly known as Joan Miró was a Catalan artist whose fauvist-cubist paintings drew much of their inspiration from Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne. Born into a family of jewelers, Miró grew up in the Barri Gòtic neighborhood of Barcelona, the traditional Jewish quarter of the city. He began studying drawing at the age of seven and enrolled in the fine art academy at La Llotja in 1907. His initial work was ridiculed by members of the art world for its avant-garde style. After moving to Paris around 1920, Miró’s distinct surreal style, thematized by Catalan nationalism, came to fruition.
Inspired by Miró’s genre-bending work, Singulart presents a curated collection of contemporary artists who similarly dare to defy convention in the name of innovative artistic expression.

Miró was known for oscillating between various styles and movements, often combining disparate influences in a single painting. Predominantly, Miró’s work has been categorized as magical realism, early fauvism, and early surrealism, though he notoriously rejected all attempts at categorization. At the height of his career, Miro also developed his own pictorial sign language, which would be central for the rest of his career. Pictorial sign languages are a rare and compelling form of expression found in the work of select contemporary artists today. Above all, Miró is defined by his experimental artistic nature that made him one of the most unique artists of his time.
This collection from Singulart online art gallery gathers artists for sale, who, like Miro, defy genres and expectations. Their work is united by a refusal to fall into one movement, school or technique. While their inspiration might be clear, their style is less so, and that’s exactly what makes their work so special and exciting to buy.
