Who was Willem de Kooning?
Willem de Kooning was a Dutch-American abstract expressionist artist. He was born in Rotterdam and moved to the United States in 1926, becoming an American citizen in 1962. Along with Jackson Pollock, de Kooning is regarded as one of the most influential abstract expressionist artists of all time. De Kooning and Pollock were both members of the New York School, a group of artists active during WWII who drew inspiration from Surrealism and the Avant-Garde movement.
De Koonings most significant works are usually categorized into two groups: black and white abstracts and the Woman series, the later of which was very much inspired by Picasso. The Woman series paved the way for abstract expressionist art in America during the 1950s. The series was characterized by fervent brushstrokes, the subject of 'woman' explored desire, frustration, inner conflict, and pleasure all at once. Comparatively, De Kooning's black and white series was characterized by densely impacted forms and a mixed media approach.
