A Reminder That Beauty Is More Than Skin Deep

Understandably enough, our society pays vast attention to the idea of beauty. Features like bilateral facial symmetry, large bright pupils, full lips, youthful skin and melanin-rich hair are some signs that are typically equated with a person's attractiveness.

There is an element that goes beyond looks that increases everybody's attractiveness; self-confidence. When you accept yourself and have a clear idea of your strengths and weaknesses, you acquire a sense of control in your life. Having a positive view of yourself and trusting your skills and abilities makes you a confident person, therefore beautiful.

How To Balance Feeling And Being Perceived As Beautiful?

The answer is in practising self-care. Your life improves when you take all the steps you can to take care of your physical health and wellbeing. Self-care can include balanced nutrition, hygiene, good sleeping, and managing stressors - but it truly looks different for everyone. Paying attention to each of those areas allows you to establish a positive mindset about yourself, which translates into good feelings and emotions of others around you.

Besides the raw facts of physical appearance, self-care has the power to boost our confidence. You become more confident about yourself when you know you are doing the right and necessary things to improve your life. Self-care steps have a lot to do with inner happiness and self-esteem. Don’t judge yourself on looks, embrace self-care instead!

Making time to let yourself recharge provides you with balance and togetherness, which is very appealing. Taking care of your basic needs (yes, sleeping well continues to be one of the best secrets for beauty) guarantees improvements in your life. Fulfilling other needs that may seem extra, like skin care or improving your eating habits, also goes towards your inner happiness.

Is Looking After Your Wellbeing a Selfish Act?

The straight answer is no. Having a busy life makes it seem like our responsibilities to others are a priority, but caring for yourself is the only way to ensure you will be ready to take care of others. Taking care of yourself must always come first.

Stop for a moment and think, what do you do to stay mentally and inspirationally aligned? If you can't think of daily moments when you intentionally practise self-care, it's best to reconsider how you can start looking after your wellbeing.

The truth is, you are the only person fully qualified to take care of your body. You are the only person who spends 24 hours a day with yourself. Therefore, taking action to procure the best environment for yourself is not selfish; it's a necessity that nobody else can provide.

Being selfish involves being concerned exclusively with oneself without regard for others. It has nothing to do with being mindful of your well being and having positive thoughts, feelings and perceptions about yourself.

Practising Self-Care Must Be A Daily Habit

Looking after our wellbeing is a responsibility we all have for the rest of our lives because nobody can do it for us. For some, it may sound like a burden or like there is not enough time in the day for it. But your self-care habits are your power to make yourself better every day. They contribute to your inner happiness.

Don't look at your wellbeing as a whole; this may seem too big of a task to tackle. Instead, break it down into the activities that you already do daily and make adjustments when necessary.

For example, brushing your teeth is a self-care act because it preserves your teeth (and your breath) for now and the future. You attempt this maintenance act every day without even questioning it.

Applying sunscreen daily to all your bare skin (and reapplying throughout the day) is about the same thing. Your skin needs protection from the damaging effects of the UV rays; why wouldn't you take the time to apply SPF every day? It's an act that will benefit you now, avoiding sunburn and preventing sun damage and hyperpigmentation in the future.

When you stay consistent practising self-care daily, you start seeing improvements in your perceptions about yourself and your inner happiness.

Here Is How Practising Self-Care On Your Skin Looks Like

Beauty is more than skin deep, but your skin needs attention too! Every person has a different approach to skincare according to their particular needs. Take a close look at the skin of your face and body, research your skin type and concerns, and start taking action on caring for your skin. The following is a basepoint of which products to look for when shopping for skincare.

  • Cleanser

More effective than water and soap, cleansers are designed to dissolve excess oil, makeup and grime from your face. Their foaming action reaches deeper-seated impurities and cleanses pores in a very effective way. A cleanser is a great first step in your skincare routine.

  • Exfoliant

Exfoliation is the removal of the oldest cells from the skin's surface. Exfoliating is a crucial step for radiant skin and to prevent the accumulation of dead cells, causing problems like breakouts, clogged pores, dull skin and discolouration.

  • Toner

Toners come in different consistencies, and their main job is restoring the skin's natural pH. Toners also moisturise and help clean the skin at a deeper level. They can have additional active ingredients for specific skin concerns.

  • Serum

Formulated to deliver high concentrations of specific active ingredients, serums are designed to perform different jobs ranging from hydration to skin brightening. Research well the type of serum your skin needs instead of following trends.

  • Treatments

Treatments' active components are designed to address any common skin concern, like fine lines, large pores, or acne. They are more effective when the skin is spotless and dry (don't skip the previous steps!).

  • Moisturiser

Perhaps the most popular skincare step is using moisturiser daily. Moisturisers are formulated with emollients that help the skin stay hydrated and smoothen your complexion, especially when using active ingredients in other products.

  • Sunscreen

The holy grail of keeping healthy skin. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a measure of how well a sunscreen will protect your skin from UVB rays. This kind of radiation causes sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and can contribute to skin cancer. We recommend applying it daily and reapplying throughout the day.

  • Face Oils

Containing a multitude of essential ingredients, face oils act as a barrier that prevents moisture from escaping the skin. They act best at night and can be used for facial massages. Facial Oils can bring back plumpness and revive your skin without clogging your pores.
