Mighty Russian is a man on a mission

Former WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev announced his intention to get his hands on the belt after beating Canadian Jean-Francois Bergeron on Saturday night. The 7ft Russian was an unconvincing if clear-cut winner on points on his return to the ring after losing the title and his unbeaten record to countryman Ruslan Chagaev in April. The 'Beast From The East' was rarely tested in Oldenburg, Germany although never looked like being able to finish the fight early against his smaller, inferior opponent.

Eliminator

However, the 34-year-old is already eyeing a date with former WBO belt holder Sergei Lyakhovich in an eliminator early next year before a re-match with Chagaev. "I am pleased with my comeback fight," said Valuev after his 48th pro win. "I would have loved to win by knock-out, but it wasn't possible. "It doesn't matter, though. Going 12 rounds against a southpaw was a good test. This was a new start for me and I am looking forward to trying to get my title back."
