Session One: Course Overview
Learning Objectives
• Define neuro linguistic programming (NLP) and its key terms
• Describe the key presuppositions of NLP
• Describe the five senses as seen by NLP
• Identify states of mind and modes of thinking using predicates
    and visual cues
• Develop and refine response strategies for any situation
• Use enriched language to engage your audience
• Interpret body language based on NLP principles
• Ask clean, precise questions to get the information you need
• Use hypnotic language and positive commands to get results
Session Two: What is Neuro
       Linguistic Programming?
Defining Neuro Linguistic Programming (I)

• Neuro = Brain
• Linguistic = Words, non-verbal signals, body
  language
• Programming = Choose to change how we
represent the signals coming from our brain
  (strategy)
Session Two: What is Neuro
       Linguistic Programming?
Defining Neuro Linguistic Programming (II)

Neuro + Linguistic + Programming =
• Thinking about thinking
• Studying how we structure our experiences
• Determining what strategies work in a way
that can be modeled, documented, and
  reproduced
• Creating a way to teach our subconscious
Session Two: What is Neuro
       Linguistic Programming?
Defining Neuro Linguistic Programming (III)
• Coaching and inspiring others by helping others look
closely at their interactions with the world
• Identifying how you experience different relationships
and how that compares with your ideal outcome for
  those relationships
• Sharing feedback in a positive, constructive manner
  that generates real change
• Accepting who you truly are and identifying areas that
you would like to grow in
• Manage your thoughts and feelings so that you feel in
  control of your environment
Session Two: What is Neuro
       Linguistic Programming?
A Brief History
• Early 1970’s: NLP founded by Drs. Richard
Bandler and John Grindler (based on observation
  of clinical therapists)
• 1970’s: NLP's popularity increases
• 1980: Bandler and Grindler part ways
• 1980-2000: Legal and personal issues distort NLP
• 2000-Present: Resurgence of the theory in its
true form, creation of regulatory and certification
  bodies
Session Two: What is Neuro
        Linguistic Programming?
Understanding Common NLP Terms
• Belief
• Values
• Chunk
• Context
• Conscious
• Unconscious
• Reality
• Mental Map
• State
Session Three:
        The NLP Presuppositions
1. Context makes meaning.
2. Every behavior has a possible positive intention
   or impact.
3. People always choose what seems to be the
best choice to them, although their choices may
   be based on faulty data.
4. Everyone is unique, so there are an infinite
number of perceptions of reality. There are no
right and wrong answers, only what we think.
5. Although you can't control the world, you can
   control your actions.
Session Three:
       The NLP Presuppositions
6. The world is systemic, and therefore so is
change. This means that the only way you can
change others is by changing yourself.
7. Real choice requires at least three options.
8. We are constantly communicating and
influencing by what we do and do not say.
9. People have the resources within themselves to
solve any problem and deal with any situation.
10.It's not a failure if you learn from it.
11.Doing and experiencing means understanding.
Session Four: The Senses
           According to NLP
Making Sense of Our Senses (I)

VAKOG
• Visual (sight)
• Auditory (sound)
• Kinesthetic (emotional and physical feelings)
• Olfactory (smell)
• Gustatory (taste)
Session Four: The Senses
            According to NLP
Making Sense of Our Senses (II)

Ways that you can use sensory systems:
• Lead system
• Representational system
• Sensory predicates (language clues)
• Eye accessing cues
Session Four: The Senses
               According to NLP
Making Sense of Our Senses (III)
• Visual • Feelings
   – I’m not getting the picture. – That feels right.
   – I see what you mean. – You need to get a grip on
   – I can’t see that happening. reality.
   – He used colorful language.
• Auditory • Taste and Smell
   – Sounds good to me! – Something about that doesn’t
   – That rings a bell. smell right.
   – His words were music to my – That seems fishy.
ears. – That’s the sweet taste of
   – I hear what you’re saying. success!
Session Four: The Senses
            According to NLP
Eye Accessing Cues (I)

• You can watch a person’s eye movements to
  determine their sensory representation.
• The point of this exercise is not to match the
other person’s eye positions, but simply to
observe and to use the information as part of
  your communication strategy.
Session Four: The Senses
            According to NLP
Eye Accessing Cues (II)
Session Four: The Senses
            According to NLP
Eye Accessing Cues (III)
Session Four: The Senses
            According to NLP
Eye Accessing Cues (IV)
Session Five:
Using Enriched Language
Session Six:
      Interpreting Body Language
The Signals We Send (I)
What might body language include?
• Tone, tempo, and rhythm of voice
• Gestures
• Facial expressions
• Head movements
• Posture and body position
• Intonations and emphasis
• Pauses and hesitations
• Eye movements, eye contact, and visual cues
Session Six:
      Interpreting Body Language
The Signals We Send (II)

States of Mind
• Associated or Dissociated
• Towards or Away From
• Match/Mismatch
• Internally or Externally Oriented
Session Seven:
          Asking Clean Questions
The NLP Style of Questioning (I)

• “To be ‘clean’ is to be naïve, present, open, not
knowing, alert, aware, fascinated, eager to learn,
  and selfless.” – Sue Knight
• Clean questions often have these elements:
   – Are in the present tense
   – Use “And” as an opener and one of the 5 W’s or How
     as a closer
   – Mirror the other person’s words
   – Probe for more information
Session Seven:
          Asking Clean Questions
The NLP Style of Questioning (II)
Useful when:
• Collecting information
• Helping someone solve a problem
• Listening to someone’s concerns
• The communicator’s message is unclear
• You want to encourage, coach, mentor, teach,
  and inspire
• You want to resolve differences while showing
  respect for other people
Session Seven:
          Asking Clean Questions
The NLP Style of Questioning (III)

Base Framework
• “And by… [their words],
  [who/what/where/when/why/how] do …”
• Example: “And by interesting, what do you
  mean?”
Session Seven:
            Asking Clean Questions
The NLP Style of Questioning (IV)

Other Frameworks
• And by … what do you mean? • And …, is there anything else?
• And that is like what? • And …, when does that happen?
• And …, where does that come from? • And …, when do you feel like that?
• And …, what does that make you • And …, who is involved in that?
think of? • And …, what does that look like?
• And …, what happens just • And …, how is that related to …?
  before/after?
Session Eight: The Power of
     Hypnotic Language

Don’t think of an
orange kangaroo.
Session Eight: The Power of
         Hypnotic Language
Embedding Positive or Negative Commands (I)

• What are you thinking of?
• Our subconscious mind can’t think in
  negatives.
• Instead of focusing on what you don’t want,
focus on what you do want.
• To use a driving analogy, look where you want
  to go!
Session Eight: The Power of
           Hypnotic Language
Embedding Positive or Negative Commands (II)

Instead of… Try…
• Don’t touch that glass • Keep your hands on the table
• Don’t go anywhere • Please stay seated
• There’s no need to worry • Try to relax
• Don’t drive into the ditch • Stay on the road
Session Eight: The Power of
          Hypnotic Language
Influencing Outcomes (I)

Presuppositions as Questions
• Give the person a choice but over elements
  that you choose
• Might also use a leading question, a rhetorical
  question, or a statement
• Only effective if you use it in appropriate
  situations
Session Eight: The Power of
          Hypnotic Language
Influencing Outcomes (II)

Insightful Sentences
• You might be thinking…
• You’re probably wondering…
• You’re probably asking yourself…
• I can predict your next move.
• I know what you are thinking/will say.
• You will likely have an answer.
Session Eight: The Power of
          Hypnotic Language
Influencing Outcomes (III)

Overcoming Challenges
• He says, “Those people never do anything
  right.”
• You could say:
   – Who are “those people?”
   – Never? Really?
   – What is the definition of “right?”
Session Nine: Putting it All Together

NLP presuppositions Positive or negative
Sensory predicates commands
Eye accessing cues Presuppositions as
Enriched language questions
Body language and Insightful sentences
 associated states Challenging question
Clean questions responses
