The exhibition design and viewer experience for Lyrical Landscapes: The Art of William Robinson are developed from Robinson’s painting ‘Green Mountains’ of 1992. Created in the rainforest hinterland of the Gold Coast, Robinson’s works illuminate the tonal varieties of colours and spatial experience unique to these environments.

With some paintings more than eight metres long the works encourage a distant view, to see the compositions in their entirety, while also warranting an intimate engagement in which nuances of texture and tone can be read. An outlook is staged within the gallery, to view the exhibition as a whole, with pathways and glimpses of overlapping paintings encouraging viewers to experience the works in more detail.

Like looking out across a mountain range from a prominent vantage point, and then walking down and out to explore it, the arrangement and atmosphere of the exhibition creates an abstracted rainforest terrain for visitors to be immersed.
