Australian Jelena Dokic has bowed out of the Sony Ericson Open on Wednesday evening (US time) in Miami.

Malaysian Open winner Dokic fell in the first round to Russian former world No.1 Dinara Safina 6-4 6-4, ending the Australian's streak of seven consecutive victories.

American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, meanwhile, celebrated her birthday by securing a second-round clash with Caroline Wozniacki on day two of the Sony Ericsson Open

Mattek-Sands, who turned 26 on Wednesday, cruised past Sofia Arvidsson 6-1 6-4 to progress through the first round and set up a meet with Wozniacki, the world No.1 and top seed in the Miami tournament.

The native Minnesotan, the highest-ranked American in the draw in the absence of the Williams sisters, is already looking forward to taking on the top-ranked Dane.

"I like playing top players. It's a good challenge for me and I like challenges," Mattek-Sands said.

"Caroline has had a great year and gets a lot of balls back. I'm excited to play her."

"She'll never give up and won't give me any free points. You have to earn everything. You have to be really focused playing her."

Meanwhile, Japan's Kimiko Date-Krumm, aged 40 years and five months, became the oldest woman to win a match at the tournament with a 6-4 6-3 dismissal of Zuzana Ondraskova.

Date-Krumm lost her serve five times but still managed to get past her Czech opponent, breaking the record set by then 39-year-old Virginia Wade in 1985.

Qualifier Jamie Hampton produced a sizzling spell of nine straight games to come from 3-6 5-4 down in defeating wildcard Ajla Tomljanovic 3-6 7-5 6-0.

Other first-round winners in the women's draw on Wednesday were Elena Vesnina, Peng Shuai, Anabel Medina Garrigues, Chanelle Scheepers, Angelique Kerber, Lourdes Dominguez Lino, Barbora Zahlavova Strycov, Yaroslava Shvedova, Timea Bacsinszky, Agnes Szavay, Varvara Lepchenko and Virginie Razzano.

Qualifiers Sania Mirza, Lucie Hradecka, Anna Tatishvili and Anastasiya Yakimova also progressed.
