Transport yourself to Bali without paying the plane fare as Gamelan Gita Asmara pulls out all the stops to present the North American premiere of the classical dance epic Legong Keraton Lasem at the Scotiabank Dance Centre this Sunday (May 3). Twenty-five musicians play everything from booming bronze gongs to otherworldly metallophones, while performers dance the story of King Lasem, an ancient ruler who kidnaps a princess but risks losing his kingdom to her outraged father. It’ll dazzle both eyes and ears, whether you’re big or small: kids under 12 get in free. The show also sees the launch of the Vancouver-based troupe’s first CD, Gamelan Gita Asmara: LIVE.
