Emergency services rushed to the home of Brigitte Bardot on Wednesday after she suffered breathing difficulties.

Her husband said the French screen legend could “no longer bear the heat”.

Responders put the 88-year-old on oxygen at her home in Saint-Tropez, where temperatures have peaked at 35C.

Her husband, Bernard d’Ormale, told the regional newspaper Var-Matin: “It was around 9am when Brigitte had trouble breathing.

“Her breathing was [heavier] than usual but she did not lose consciousness,” he added.

“Like all people of a certain age, she can no longer bear the heat. It happens at 88 years old.”

After she was given oxygen, paramedics “stayed to monitor her”, according to d’Ormale.

Paris-born Bardot, an animal rights activist, now runs an animal sanctuary in St Tropez, having quit the film industry in 1973.

She shot to fame in the 1956 film And God Created Woman, but has since become a controversial figure, having been previously convicted over comments about Muslims.

Bardot has been married to d’Ormale, a far-right political aide, since 1992.

Like much of southern Europe, their home in the French Riviera resort has experienced higher than usual temperatures.

Highs of 48C are expected on the Continent, with record temperatures recorded in various parts of Italy and Spain.

The blazing heat has triggered wildfires in Greece, Switzerland and Malta.
