Who was Piper Laurie?
Piper Laurie, born January 22, 1932, was an American actress best known for her roles in Carrie, The Hustler and Twin Peaks.
The Oscar-nominated actress, born Rosetta Jacobs, broke out onto the film scene when she starred in the 1950 American comedy Louisa, alongside Ronald Reagan.
She made a splash in Hollywood when she starred as Margaret in Brian De Palma's horror classic, Carrie. The 1976 film was based off Stephen King's book. Piper played Carrie's religious mother. Her performance nabbed her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
She was also nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for her role as Sarah Packard in the 1961 film, The Hustler.
In 1986, she was nominated for another Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in Children of a Lesser God.
Her final film performance was in 2018 in White Boy Rick.
Besides films, she also starred in a number of television films and series including The Thorn Birds, St. Elsewhere and Skag.
She played a big role in the 1990 series, Twin Peaks. She played Catherine Martell. She won a Golden Globe for her performance in the sci-fi series.
