SYDNEY’S seafaring community will gather next month for the 58th annual commemoration at the Merchant Navy Memorial and Columbarium.

The Merchant Navy War Memorial Fund organises the ceremony each year to pay respect to seafarers of the Australian Merchant Navy and reflect on their role in Australia’s history and culture.

The MNWMF has been anticipating the upcoming 2023 ceremony at Rookwood Necropolis since Covid prompted the cancellation of last year’s event.

Rear Admiral Christopher Smith – Commander Australian Fleet, will deliver a special address as this year’s guest of honour.

Rear Admiral Smith’s presentation will focus on the role Australia’s Merchant Navy played during the world wars, as well as some timely maritime developments.

The 58th annual commemoration will be held at Rookwood Necropolis on Hawthorne Avenue, Lidcombe on Sunday 16 April 2023.

Proceedings will commence at 1100 and will be followed by light refreshments.

To RSVP, contact MNWMF secretary Stan Moriarty at secretary@mnwmf.com.au or on 0418 488 163 by Thursday 6 April.
