What I see in the mirror: Samantha Fox

This article is more than 13 years old
'At 20, I didn't know what suited me. I had terrible fashion sense and awful make-up. Now, in my 40s, I look in the mirror and see a content person'

I look in the mirror and see someone who has achieved their dreams. As a kid, I dreamed of being a pop star, a glamorous woman and travelling the world. And I've done that all my life. There is not a country in the world that doesn't know my name – I am a great British export!

I still have long, blond hair, and I am fitter than I've ever been. As I approached 40, I worried about ageing and started thinking about nutrition and drinking lots of water. I knew I had to work hard in the gym if I wanted to be in this business for a long time. No one's going to book a fat Sam Fox. When I was a model, everybody was scrutinising me and I felt I had to go to the gym because my figure had to be fantastic. Now that I'm a singer, I've got a different kind of body – it's more athletic.

At 20, I didn't know what suited me. I had terrible fashion sense and awful make-up. My 30s were great: I became more confident, I knew who I was and who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. I didn't have that confusion over my sexuality any more. Now, in my 40s, I look in the mirror and I see a content person. I'm very happy with Myra – we've been together for 12 years, and got engaged last year.

When somebody wants me to sign an old picture, it's like looking at another person. Page Three was so long ago. Now, when I am doing a photoshoot for an album or promotion, they say, "Give me that Sam Fox smile." It's funny – people used to say it was my smile they liked looking at on Page Three.
