The holiday season is a joyous time for giving, togetherness, and yes, love. There are quite a few Christmas traditions, but perhaps none so famous as kissing under the mistletoe. Have you ever wondered why we kiss under the mistletoe, though? Maybe not. It's one of those quirky holiday customs that has been around for so long that we don't even think to question where it came from. But this year, before you pucker up, read up and learn all about the history and origin of this tradition.

What does mistletoe symbolize?

Believe it or not, the symbolic origins of mistletoe date back thousands of years, all the way to the 1st century A.D. During this time, the Celtic Druids considered mistletoe to be a sacred symbol of vivacity and fertility. In fact, they administered it to humans and animals in an effort to restore fertility.

Where does kissing under the mistletoe come from?

While the true origins of kissing under the mistletoe remain up for debate, they are often traced to Norse mythology. In some retellings of one popular story, Frigg, the goddess of love, declared mistletoe a symbol of love and vowed to kiss anyone who passed beneath it.

However, according to historian Mark Forsyth, while the story may mention mistletoe, it actually "has nothing to do with kissing or Christmas."

He and other historians say it's hard to determine how kissing under the mistletoe started, but Forsyth notes that the tradition likely began between 1720 and 1784 in England. It's believed to have started among servants before spreading to other classes.

What does it mean to kiss under the mistletoe?

By the end of the 18th century, it was common in England to hang mistletoe in one's home during Christmas celebrations, and people believed that good luck came to those who kissed underneath the plant.

No matter the origins, mistletoe is now considered a representation of love and romance during the magical Christmas season. Think of it as an ode to spontaneity in relationships, and take a moment this year to slow down and show your sweetie some love!
