Braveheart child star is unrecognisable 27 years after playing William Wallace’s love interest

A SCOTS child star who played William Wallace's love interest in Braveheart 27 years ago looks unrecognisable today.

Mhairi Calvey, now 33, played five-year-old Murran - the younger version of Wallace's lover in the popular Mel Gibson film.

Gibson directed the famous flick that charted the Scottish hero's life.

The actress starred in the movie - which went on to win five Oscars - when she was just five years old which came out back in 1995.

Originally from the Isle of Arran, Mhairi returned to school after filming Braveheart and focused on her education.

She later went on to study her BA (Hons) in Acting at the Guildford School of Acting.

In 2016, she decided to continue pursuing her passion for acting and make her comeback into the industry and has since starred in feature films Fear The Invisible Man, The Eastern Front and Robert The Bruce.

Last year, she won Best Newcomer at The National Film Awards.

She also won a Best Actress Award for TV film Gemini a few years before.

Mhairi then turned her hand to producing and directing and started her own production company called Dream Reel Entertainment.

She wrote and produced her debut short film called Gaslight.

In 2021 she also became the director of Scottish film festival The Scotland International Festival of Cinema.

She is set to play the lead in Fear The Invisible Man with David Hayman and is preparing to launch a new film festival in Scotland.

Mhairi is also a part of Scotland ­International Festival of Cinema this year which has attracted big acts - it's panel of judges include Angus Macfadyen and Fatal Attraction star Anne Archer.

It will take place at the Eastgate theatre in Peebles from April 19 to April 24.

Recently, we also told how Scots actor James Robinson looks unrecognisable now after he played a young William Wallace in Braveheart in the mid 1990s.

The Scots actor played the title role in the first part of the film as Wallace's backstory was revealed.
