NOT HIS FIRTH CHOICE

Colin Firth hates his ‘unglamorous’ name as no kings or heroes share it

COLIN Firth hates his “unglamorous” first name — complaining there are no kings, poets or heroes called Colin.

The Pride and Prejudice and Bridget Jones star called it a name “you’d give your goldfish as a joke”.

The 61-year-old Oscar-winner added that his parents Shirley and David never managed to properly explain why they gave him the name.

He said: “They called me Colin . . . and I never had a satisfactory explanation from my parents about why they named their firstborn that.

“It doesn’t really have a glamorous ring to it, does it?

"There are no kings called Colin, no poets that I can think of and, in all the books I’ve read, I haven’t come across a single hero called Colin.”

But Colin must have been forgetting M&S’s Colin the Caterpillar — one of Britain’s most-loved chocolately birthday cakes.

He told Candis Magazine: “I did see an episode of Blackadder on TV in which there was a Dachshund called Colin — that was supposed to reduce you to fits of laughter.”

Data from the Office for National Statistics shows there were just 27 babies called Colin last year and was just the 1,019th most popular name in the UK.

In the 1960s it was among the top 25 boys’ names.
