BIKINI babes, beer on tap and millions of students partying day and night – Spring Break is a highlight for many college-goers in the US.

This year has seen booze-mad party animals take part in twerking contests and fascinating images reveal the raunchy event over the years.

Spring break started in the 1930s, when colleges would take their swimming teams to competitions in Florida.

That tradition continued into the Sixties and a number of films — including Where The Boys Are — chronicled wild parties in the Sunshine State.

This collection of images shows college students taking part in the famous bikini and wet t-shirt contests.

The first wet t-shirt contest was launched in the seventies in 1975, with bold winners being awarded $75.

Other images show scantily-clad women doing body shots and downing funnels of beer on the beach.

As word spread over the years, more and more college students began to head to hotspots in Florida including Fort Lauderdale, Daytona Beach, Miami and Panama City Beach.

By 1985 around 370,000 students flocked for sun-kissed fun and in 1986, MTV started to broadcast Spring Break specials from Daytona Beach in Florida.

Now millions head to beaches all over America to take part in the debaucherous event.

The daily party usually starts at noon, when the sexually charged students descend on the beach carrying American footballs, homemade cocktails and cool boxes fitted with speakers.

Highly organised fraternities bring their own marquees emblazoned with the star-spangled banner and at 24-hour party venues, students drink unlimited booze for the price of a £45 ticket.

By the evening, inhibitions have been lowered to such an extent that there are regular reports of young people having sex in the sea.

Just yesterday, footage emerged of a scantily-clad woman twerking while clinging to the roof of a car zooming down the highway in Miami during Spring Break.
