Jeffrey Smart, the Australian painter renowned for his depictions of modern urban landscapes, has died in Italy. He was 91.

The artist “slowly and surely faded away” and died at a hospital near his home at Arezzo, Tuscany, last night, according to his Australian agent, Stuart Purves.

Smart’s partner, Ermes De Zan, was with him when he died.

Smart trained in Australia and Paris and was known for his precisionist, stark urban landscapes and considered one of Australia’s greatest living artists.

The Adelaide-born artist worked as an art critic for an Australian newspaper, as a compere for a children’s show and as an art teacher in Sydney before moving to Italy permanently in 1963.
