Cristiano Ronaldo got emotional and was in tears following Portugal's exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Morocco, who entered the quarter-final as minnows, pulled off one of the biggest upsets in football history and handed favourites Portugal a 1-0 defeat to move into the semi-final of the showpiece event.
By the virtue of their heroic win, Morocco became the first African country to reach the semi-final of the FIFA World Cup. Cristiano Ronaldo couldn't hold back his tears and was spotted crying on the pitch. He found it hard to hold back his tears even in the tunnel.
While it isn't confirmed, this was Ronaldo's last World Cup and his dream of lifting the elusive trophy will remain unfulfilled.
Morocco, who defeated heavyweights Belgium & Spain and drew against Croatia on their way to the quarter-final, will now face the winner of England and France in the semi-final.
Youssef En-Nesyri did the job for Morroco and scored the match-winning goal for his team in the 42nd minute and Morocco went into half-time with a 1-0 lead over Portugal.
Portugal were quick to make a big change after the first half and they brought in Cristiano Ronaldo in the 50th minute. The star footballer was in action right away but missed a couple of opportunities. His arrival on the pitch did make the fans go berserk but it made little impact on Portugal's chances of hitting an equaliser.
A total of 8 extra minutes were added after the completion of 90 minutes but Portugal failed to do the job in that time. During that period, Morocco was reduced to 10 players as Walid Cheddira was shown the red card in the 93rd minute. He was shown the yellow card in the 91st minute.
Argentina and Croatia will square off in the first semi-final on December 14 while Morocco will be in action on December 15.
