Fuso unveils the remodeled heavy-duty Shogun

The first redesign in six years delivers upgraded economy, safety and comfort

Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation unveiled a new model of the Super Great, which is called Shogun in our market, at the Japan Mobility Show on October 25. The sales of the new Super Great are scheduled to start later this year locally.

The new Shogun, now freshened up six years after its last major redesign in 2017, focuses on delivering improved economy, safety, and comfort.

The latest model is equipped with the 6R30 high-performance 12.8-litre engine, which we already get here in Australia, although it will now be fitted with two turbochargers.

In addition, the cab has been redesigned to improve aerodynamics, and tyres with low rolling resistance have also been adopted to meet Japan’s FY2025 Fuel Efficiency Standards known as JH25.

The latest Shogun also features an upgraded cab design that centers on the Fuso Black Belt motif. The Fuso Black Belt, which is integrated into other products within the lineup such as the light-duty Canter and the heavy-duty Aero Queen coach, provides Fuso products with an recognisable identity.

The new truck comes with the latest in advanced safety technology. It is equipped with Active Brake Assist 6 (ABA6), the updated frontal collision mitigation system.

Active Side Guard Assist 2.0, which detects hazards on both sides of the vehicle for turns and lane changes, is also part of the standard product offering.

Engine updates

The new 6R30 engine improves thermal efficiency by increasing combustion pressure through increased compression ratio and turbo modification. Two turbochargers are configured to match the engine's power output, resulting in an increase in torque, particularly at lower speeds. Optimisations have been made to better accommodate earlier shifting at lower speeds. For drivers who prefer the AMT Shift Pilot, gearshift timing has also been adjusted to match the increase in low-speed torque.

These improvements to the combustion system, as well as the reduction of driving resistance and tuning of various engine parts, have resulted in even better fuel economy.
