Roy Lichtenstein was an artist born in New York in 1923 - he eventually became famous for his bright and bold artworks that became a huge part of the Pop Art movement. This art movement focussed on making art from some of the most common and mundane features of 20th Century life - such as movies, adverts, and commercial products.
Roy Lichtenstein's art was based on the coloured comic books that were hugely popular at the time. Many people felt that comic-books couldn't be classed as art because of their simplistic use of colours and lines. Lichtenstein used this idea to try and create art in the same style in order to challenge this view. His artworks used only a few vibrant colours, organised in small dots or lines, but in a way that made the art seem much more lively and exciting.
Roy Lichtenstein's art eventually became some of the most recognisable in the world of Pop Art - alongside works by Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns. His work is still hugely popular today and one of his paintings recently sold for 165 million dollars!

Since the 1960s, Roy Lichtenstein's art has been easily recognisable despite many others being inspired by his works. This is largely down to Lichtenstein's unique style and techniques that he used to create his works.
He is famous for using only a few primary colours in his work, just like an industrial printer would use. He also adopted the Ben-Day dot system which was used in comics and newspapers to help increase the range of colours and shades they could create.
Despite being renowned for his paintings, Lichtenstein also created a large number of sculptures and ceramics during his career. In total, he created over 5,000 artworks during his life and left behind a legacy that has inspired artists all over the world.
He will always be remembered as one of the most influential figures in the Pop Art movement, alongside other famous artists such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring.
