I understand that owning a hedgehog in some states is illegal. Which states is it legal and where could some one buy one (or two)? Maybe!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domesticated_hedgehog
Legality
Because a hedgehog is commonly kept in a cage or similar enclosure, it is allowed in some residences where cats and dogs are not allowed.
It is illegal to own a hedgehog as a pet in some US states and some Canadian municipalities, and a license is needed to legally breed them. These restrictions may have been enacted due to the ability of some hedgehog species to carry foot and mouth disease, a highly contagious disease of cloven-hooved animals. No such restrictions exist in most European countries.
The following is a list of locations where it is illegal to own a hedgehog. By African Pygmy hedgehog, this list is referring to the domesticated hedgehog commonly bred and sold as pets, not a specific breed of hedgehog from Africa. All locations are in the United States.
California[1]
Georgia
Hawaii
Douglas County, Nebraska
New York City, New York (a call to the City's 311 information service indicated that hedgehogs are not specifically prohibited—not listed in any way by name as either definitely legal or illegal. They were listed as illegal in the City Health Code in 2000.[2])
Other legal issues:
Australia: All hedgehogs are classified as exotic pets that are illegal to import.[3]
Canada:
In Quebec, European hedgehogs are illegal. African Pygmy hedgehogs are legal.
United Kingdom, Netherlands, Spain, Finland, and Austria: European hedgehogs are protected and cannot be kept as pets. African Pygmy hedgehogs may legally be kept as pets.
United States:
In Arizona, a permit is required; the permit is very difficult to obtain.
In Idaho and Oregon, European hedgehogs are illegal. African Pygmy hedgehogs are legal.
In Maine, New Jersey and Wyoming, a permit is required.
In Wisconsin, an import permit from the state department of agriculture is required to bring a hedgehog into the state.
In Virginia, a permit is required and a 12-month waiting period before purchasing as a pet—In Fairfax county only.
In Pennsylvania, hedgehogs may not be imported into the state, but hedgehogs in the state as of 1992 and their descendants are at least theoretically allowed. In practice, enforcement of this law has been rumored to be arbitrary and ill-informed.[4]

I do not see Louisiana in your list St3v3m. I am not sure if I could or would want to raise one of these little fellows but damn they are cute, in an ugly way.

It appears that the male hedgehog must approach procreation very carefully.

Nice picture. I live in suburbs of the city and have a reasonably large garden (yard). Up until about 5/6 years ago I always had resident breeding hedgehogs but have not seen one for some years. Don't even see roadkilled ones now. I think that they are in sharp decline here. I am overrun with slugs now.

when I was working with CARE I lived for a few years in Sudan where hedgehogs live naturally and they would occasionally enter our compound in search of water. We often left the tap dripping to welcome them.
