Bicycle Day @ CoSM:The Mystical ExperienceA Discussion on Psychedelic Therapywith Alex Grey, Allyson Grey& Anthony Bossis
“St. Albert and the LSD Revelation Revolution” by Alex Grey, 2005-06, oil on wood panel.
Bicycle Day is a holiday celebrating the first human trial of LSD by the late Dr. Albert Hofmann. He had previously mixed the medicine in his laboratory at Sandoz Pharmaceuticals, Basel, Switzerland, and on April 19th, 1943 he self-administered the first ever dose of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide-25. In Central Europe during World War II, Dr. Hofmann had no car and took his bicycle home. The ride, in an altered state of consciousness, has been commemorated annually with great reverence for the potential of psychedelics as, life-benefitting possibility. Science is now revealing the healing potential of the mystical experience offered by psychedelic psychotherapy.
“Albert Hofmann & the New Eleusis” by Alex Grey, 2017, acrylic on linen
The Grey’s will share their personal connections with LSD in providing visionary landmarks in their life and art. Alex will describe his paintings, St. Albert and the LSD Revelation Revolution and his recent work Albert Hofmann and the New Eleusis. The Greys will present highlights of ancient entheogenic civilizations, a report on current international Visionary Culture and an update on the building of Entheon, a sanctuary of Visionary Art at CoSM, Chapel of Sacred Mirrors.
Guest speaker for the evening will be Anthony Bossis, PhD, a clinical psychologist and Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine. He was Director of Palliative Care research, Co-Principal Investigator, and a session guide for the NYU Psilocybin Cancer Anxiety Study. Dr. Bossis is Project Director for the NYU Psilocybin Religious Leaders Study. He maintains a private psychotherapy practice in New York City.
The NYU School of Medicine clinical trial published in 2016 demonstrated efficacy of a single psilocybin-generated mystical experience in helping individuals with cancer cultivate meaning, enhance existential well-being, and foster a greater acceptance of the dying process with less anxiety. Subjective features of a mystical experience include unity, sacredness, transcendence, awe, ineffability, and an enhanced awareness of positive emotions including that of love.
The psilocybin-generated mystical experience offers a novel therapeutic approach to promote meaning and openness to the mystery of death. Implications for the scientific study of psilocybin and mystical experience include the alleviation of end-of-life psychospiritual distress, enhanced psychological well-being, treatment of mental health disorders, and a deeper understanding for the study of meaning and spirituality.
