Marlins pitcher Brian Moran's first MLB strikeout victim is ... his brother Colin

In a scene that took place countless times while they were growing up, Brian Moran was on the mound and his brother Colin was at the plate. Only Thursday night, the Moran brothers were both wearing major league uniforms.

The Miami Marlins called up Brian, 30, from Class AAA New Orleans on Tuesday. Two days later, he made his MLB debut. And after getting the first Pittsburgh Pirates hitter to ground out, up stepped younger brother Colin, 26.

With their parents watching in the stands, Colin took the first two pitches for balls, then fouled off the third. With the count 3-2, Brian snuck a slider over the middle of the plate for his first career strikeout.

What are the odds of facing your brother in your major league debut? According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it's the first time since at least 1900 that it's ever happened.

Colin Moran has been the more celebrated of the Moran brothers, being selected sixth overall in the 2013 draft -- by the Marlins, coincidentally. He made his debut in 2016 with the Astros before becoming a regular for the first time last season after being traded to the Pirates.

Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Colin Moran and Miami Marlins relief pitcher Brian Moran are interviewed on MLB Network before their teams played Thursday night in Pittsburgh.

Brian Moran, meanwhile, has had an even more circuitous route to the majors. He was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the seventh round in 2009, but toiled for 10 years in the minors before finally getting his chance.

His debut was short and sweet. After striking out his brother, Moran hit Josh Bell with a pitch, then retired Melky Cabrera on a fly ball to right to end the inning.
