Are seventies the new fifties? Dame Helen Mirren, 77, indicated they certainly could be, as she appeared on the red carpet in Berlin on Monday. At the premiere of the biopic Golda, in which she plays Israel’s first female Prime Minister, Golda Meir, Mirren looked stunning wearing a fitted black dress and new hairstyle.

Enhancing her glamorous red lip and bare décolletage, the actor wore her silver hair in long, Rapunzel-esque waves. Chest-skimming, super-smooth, and parted slightly to the side, Mirren’s new look was very much on trend—everyone from Dua Lipa to Priyanka Chopra has been sporting ultra-long waves recently.

Mirren wearing her hair this long represents more of a statement than it perhaps should. There is an old-fashioned idea that once a woman reaches “a certain age,” she should cut her hair short— that long, flowing hair is somehow the sole preserve of young women. Helen’s decision to show off her healthy, voluminous gray mane on the red carpet looks—and feels—refreshing. If Mirren looking this radiant is anything to go by, it’s high time we threw out any and all archaic beauty “rules” for good.
